How do colleges verify your high school transcript?

Quick question, as to how colleges verify your transcript. My school always allows the student to access the transcript (unofficial), its just updated every semester. One problem is that when I apply ED to University of Penn this fall, I have to send me unofficial transcript as my high school WILL NOT release my transcript. I asked around to some seniors, and they ended up sending their unofficial transcript.

Is this okay, or what should I do? I asked my guidance counselor but she said, they can't release them officially? so is this a problem or am I just worrying too much?

I don’t understand - does your high school not release ANY transcripts, or is there a particular issue with your transcript (unpaid fees, for example).

Not releasing/sending transcripts for students applying to college - why would a school operate this way?

no, I don’t have any unpaid fees or whatnot, but the problem is, Iam in something called an Academy which is where I attend UNO(University of Nebraska, Omaha) currently. The Highschool is not allowed to release the official transcript. All the can do is allow me to send an unofficial transcript that just has a principals signature on it I can not get the official transcript until June of 2013 (when I graduate, but I need the transcript this Fall for ED).

Wait, what? You’re not allowed to have a copy of your official transcript? That makes positively no sense. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that before…

Either way, I suppose it’s not the end of the world because your unofficial and official transcripts shouldn’t be all that different. At my school the only real difference I think is the principal does sign official ones (of course, she would probably sign unofficial ones too if we asked, but we’ve never had a problem with getting official copies), plus it comes in a sealed envelope with the school’s crest and an explanation of our school, its courses and its grading is explained because it’s a little different, at least for the area we’re in (we’re a charter school with all honors/AP classes and no weighted GPA).

So I guess you’d just send an unofficial copy that’s signed by the principal or have your guidance counselor upload a copy onto the Common App (maybe he or she would be able to use an “official” copy?) if you’re submitting online.

I really hope that made at least a teensy bit of sense; sorry if it didn’t.

Good luck!

Univ of Penn is a common ap school. That means you can do your application entirely online and your counselor should be uploading your transcript when they do their part.

Your GPA is calculated as of the end of Jr. year. Our school was not done doing theirs until Sept but then once they finished and we checked the unofficial one for correctness, they uploaded it and sent it to schools my son applied to. Ask your counselor how they send their paperwork to common app schools.
