How do colleges view entrepreneurs?

Hello all, I am glad to be a new member to college confidential. The topic I wish to discuss here is the fact that I currently have a business that produces roughly 100 dollars worth of profits daily, minus taxation. It is a business with sustainable growth and the profits will hopefully increase as time moves on. Now my question for you all, how will colleges view it? Obviously it will be seen as a positive, but exactly how positive? Like, what I mean to ask is, is it worth the effort to keep at the business, or should I develop more extracurriculars? I do have a lot of fun in the business but my main goal is to get into a good college. Thanks in advance!

If you enjoy running your business and you are generating real profits and anticipate further growth, then I would suggest you keep at it. Don’t make business decisions based on how adcoms may perceive your candidacy.

With that said, I’ll tell you what you want to hear. In my opinion, you are definitely demonstrating impact, passion, and commitment by running a business. I don’t recommend you give that up so you can write on your apps that you volunteered X hours at the local hospital or led Y club at school with no significant impact statements. If, however, you feel you can demonstrate greater impact (however you define it) with other ECs, then by all means pursue them.

thanks mate, I appreciate it. And you are right, i did want to hear it XD. But like will it increase my chances at a high-tier school more than the average Ec’s, or would it not?

It’s another EC, no more, no less.

I’m not sure what you mean by average EC. But either way, it isn’t the EC that counts. What matters more is your level of involvement, passion, and impact for what you’re doing and your ability to convey those qualities in your essays and interviews.

Your business experience might be attractive to adcoms if you apply to business programs, such as UPenn Wharton. For other majors, it would be seen as an average EC.
