How do colleges view music?

I was just wondering how much importance the extremely competitive colleges place on music (ie state music awards and such) because no one ever seems to mention music in their ECs much. ~_~

I don't know that it's any more or less important than any other EC. If you are talented and that shows on your resume, then great! But will they look at you differently than a talented painter or writer or athlete? Probably not (unless they're recruiting the athlete, of course...).

They're looking for you to show passion, commitment and achievement. They know what it takes to become a serious musician. It is viewed with importance, particularly if their orchestra needs your instrument!

My D contacted Ivy Music departments prior to the fall of her senior year to see how interested they might be in her combination of academic passions and musical proficiency. She got an enthusiastic response from one school and an invitation to visit and audition, the faculty member subsequently offered to weigh in positively with the admissions committee, and she was accepted ED. Did the Music faculty recommendation make a difference? I can't say, but it was certainly nice to have such encouragement and support.

My daughter is a musician who plays 5 instruments, but really excels in choir music, having been in a leadership role in a famous girl's choir as well as a few other minor choirs in high school. Her grades were good(but not great) and her SATs were also good, but not great (really high verbal, but low math). Anyway, she stressed her desire and ability to sing in various choirs at the University of Chicago ( having researched them thoroughly) and was accepted there. When she got to school three of their major choirs were already looking for her and now, in her second year, she sings in all three.
Did the music help her? I would have to definitely say yes.

I don't think they view music at all, they probably hear it instead.

Thanks for all your help! I was just curious since I already applied to all the colleges I'm considering. Love your comment GoldShadow--never really thought about diction when I was posting. ;D
