Also do you know a lot of people who have gotten into med schools from Cornell?

Bump??? anyone have any experience with this?

Plenty of premeds get into med school from Cornell. In fact, Cornell is in the top 3 or so colleges in the country in terms of the number of students it sends to med school each year.

But, you need to understand that while Cornell provides you with excellent support in your journey to become a physician (in terms of research opportunities, excellent advising, great academic environment, etc.), the rest is up to you, the individual.

21 schools here 0 acceptances! haha. i applied to a lot of low ranked schools, and did not know that they just auto reject you basically. they either hate NY kids, or cornell kids, or just me

Probably, just you. Although, I don’t know your application profile specifically. No offense obviously.

But, I met a ton of Cornell kids while interviewing.

Thanks a lot to norcal and moneydad, @anbuitachi, what were your stats?

3.9 36 yup

I’m guessing there’s a red flag somewhere in your application. That or you have really really bad social skills. With similar numbers from Cornell, I had 13 interviews and 5 acceptances from mainly top and mid tier med schools.

@anbuitachi based on monydad’s post it says that everyone with 3.9+ and 35+ was accepted in 2010 so I have to agree with norcalguy, is there something like a lack of volunteering? and also if there is a problem like that do you intend on trying to fix and and re-applying seeing as the things that are hardest to change (GPA and MCAT) are already good?

@Norcalguy, can you think of something that would have set you and anbuitachi apart? or something significant that you did?

interviewing skills! haha. i had 11 interviews. 0 acceptances. there were some pretty insane interviewing questions… and some bad experiences/getting sick…

i think luck is a huge factor.

i only applied to a couple of top tier schools and didn’t receive interview from any of them (Cornell, Mayo)

Other schools that are known to reject a LOT of out of states/general applicants are those that receive large # of apps (i wish i knew this ahead of time, wouldve saved hundreds of dollars…).

And with a 3.9 36, i only had like 2-3 interviews for out of state schools (~10)

omg anbuitachi… ur seriously scaring the poop out of me right now… dayum??? 3.9 GPA and a 36 MCAT is ridiculously good! 11 interviews and u screwed them all up? I thought it was 50% chance after u get an interview!

If only u used ur mangekyou sharingan on them?? or if u didn’t put akatsuki criminal on ur application??

wow anbu, i’m really sorry to hear that. have you tried talking to hcec about what to do next? it’s a little ridiculous to get rejected from these schools (even top ones) with such good grades and MCAT scores.

i’m worried about med school too, seeing as my gpa is 3.2…

I don’t know his application so I can’t comment on this. He got the right number of interviews. He just didn’t perform. Medical school and being a doctor in general is about appearances. You don’t necessarily have to be the smartest or most knowledgeable. But, you need to be able to carry yourself well and to exude confidence when you need to. He’s a good paper applicant but that doesn’t translate to being a good med student.

I think you should go see HCEC and your adviser asap. Ask for a brutally honest appraisal of your social skills and see if you have any red flags. Good luck.

None of us can know for sure what it is but there is definitely something wrong with anbuitachi’s interview performance. A 3.9 from Cornell and 36 clearly gets you past the first round of cuts–he did get 11 interviews after all. Anbuitachi is an aberration and likely came across as very socially awkward (speculating…I’m not trying to be a dick).

You gotta cut this sh** out completely if you’re planning on interviewing at medical schools or just interviewing in general. Talking like this anywhere is a pretty salient indicator of social ineptitude and suggests that you don’t have the skills or social presence to articulate your thoughts in front of (largely conservative) interviewers.

All that being said, if you want to be a doctor, you’ll have a much easier time at a state school or LAC. From personal experience and the stories of pre-med friends at Cornell, the prestige means nothing for medical school. You can either bust your ass here for a mediocre GPA or destroy curves at a state school while getting largely the same education because let’s be serious, there aren’t too many different ways of teaching mechanics or calculus or biochem I. I have idiot friends from back home getting into med school with 3.9/30s while much much smarter kids here are getting rejected with 3.1/39s. Cornell punishes you for wanting to take challenging/interesting science courses so what you’re left with is a bunch of kids taking the minimum med school prereqs while taking “Magical Mushrooms,” “Earthquakes,” and AEM classes just to fluff their GPA.

Yes a joking forum post like that is definitely a “salient indicator of social ineptitude and suggests that you don’t have the skills or social presence to articulate your thoughts in front of (largely conservative interviewers).”

Excellent deduction. Its people like you that help to create the infamous Cornell student stereotype.

Yes the students at Cornell are all the same so they can be perfectly stereotyped in a very meaningful, accurate and (in)famous way. They are in no way a highly diverse group that defies stereotyping such as,say, the students at, I don’t know… Tufts, for example- are. If you believe such stereotype exists, certainly you wouldn’t want to be 'branded" by it. If I were you I would guide my matriculation decision accordingly.

i did. she did an mock interview w/ me. she said i did fine

and i know someone w/ 4.0 and 40 and didn’t get in yet.
