In the admissions packet for other schools I applied to there was a list of all of the aid I was offered and then I was supposed to sign the paper and say whether not I accept all of the loans or specify which ones I want to take out (ie. I want the stafford loan but don't need the PLUS). I didn't see anything like this for NYU and I was wondering if I messed up or missed something...

read the bottom link on this page first.

The plus loans are suggested. When you do the MPN thru the HESC website you just don't do that link. You will need to have the name of the borrower for the stafford loan. NYU doesn't channel you into a specific bank. you can use any you want. The perkins is a federal loan, no bank to choose.

FYI, we just got the letter from HESC in the mail this week.

I was wondering the same thing as ava >_> I really need the scholarship that NYU is giving me or else I will be unable to attend.

do I have to accept the scholarship in any way or is it just a given that I of course want it?

Your financial aid award letter may suggest several types of loans for which you are eligible, based on the information we have about you (e.g. your anticipated points/credits, your expected housing status, your financial need as determined by the results of the FAFSA, etc.) and, for campus-administered loans, the availability of funds.

Some federal loans, such as the Perkins Loan, Health Professions Student Loan, and Nursing Loan, are administered through the University and require you to complete a promissory note to ensure appropriate loan disbursement and credit on your Bursar bill. Promissory notes are mailed to each student in July/August. Applicants for the spring semester will receive it with their award letter. If, once the semester begins and you were awarded one of these loans, you did not receive a promissory note in the mail, you should immediately phone or visit us to request one, after which you should receive credit for the loan on your bill. (Be sure to keep your mailing address current on Albert.)

Other federal loans are obtained through external sources. Your award package may include information about a "suggested loan." This means that you are eligible for the type and amount of loan specified, based upon the information we have about you at the time the award is offered. It does not mean you will automatically receive the loan, but rather informs you of your current eligibility and how to apply. The suggested loan amount on your award letter is the maximum you are eligible for and is the amount that NYU has certified for you. If you wish to borrow an amount lower than suggested, simply contact the lender AFTER your loan application(s) have been submitted as instructed. For more information about these loans, see Federal Stafford Loan and Federal PLUS Loan.

A variety of additional, non-federal loan programs are also available. See Alternative Loans for more information.

how do you select a lender for the stafford loans?

you select a lender for the stafford loan during the process of applying for your Master Promissary note @ www.hesc.org

why do i need two references?

I am very ignorant of this process, forgive me. What type of person is usually used as a reference for this process (the Stafford Loan through HESC)? I am new the idea of financial referencing.

and will they be notified that they are references?
