How do I apply?

I will be entering my senior year of high school this fall. I know that the common application comes out on August 1st. However, I honestly don't know how to apply to college.

I know I need to ask for recommendations from two teachers (and an outside? I want to ask my club swim coach but I don't know if it's useful or how to get him to write it, because I go away to boarding school now so I need to ask him this summer before I know where I'm applying. How does this work?)

How do I get started on my essays or supplement essays right now? I don't understand how people are writing them already.

What is this about people putting "resumes" in the additional information section? What do I put there, and is there anything else I should put in the additional information section?

Is it okay to interview with a school if you aren't sure you're applying yet? I know that I'm interested in several schools, but I live on the opposite coast so I really only have one chance to visit, so I should interview then, right?

Also, I'm applying to a few schools that I've heard are really interested to know if you are interested/are good to keep in contact with. I toured them in March. What should I do? Send them emails? About what?

Is there anything else I should know or be doing? I'm actually so lost. My college counselor at school is not a help at all.

Some colleges may have released their supplements already. The common application essay prompts have been released (see post #22):

I would do the interviews if you can. It can’t really hurt even if decide not to apply to the school.

Hopefully we’ll all be able to figure this stuff out together with some help! Class of 2012 :)

Thanks! How do I know if a school has released its supplements? I’ve looked on a couple of the schools’ websites and I can’t find anything about it (Davidson and Hamilton).

Do you know anything about putting the resumes under the additional information? I’ve seen it mentioned so many times on here but I don’t know how to do it/what they are talking about.
