How do I buy my books at u of m?

I am an incoming freshman and I move in on Tuesday. Where do I go and what do I do to get my books? Do I need to pay in cash/credit card or does it go to my tuition? Anything else I need to know? Thank you

You can buy any book at ulrich’s on south u but check amazon to see if there are cheaper options. There usually are.

Amazon is always a good option but not always the cheapest. It is probably the most reliable, however. You can also buy from other students, there are constantly students on U-M Facebook pages looking to buy and sell books. Renting from places online is sometimes a good cheap idea. There are a couple student-run book sales and exchanges on campus, including one in the Union.

I don’t recommend buying from Ulrich’s or any other bookstore unless you need the book immediately and can’t find it anywhere else.

It’s not factored into tuition. You need to buy the books yourself with cash or credit. It’s your responsibility to make sure you have them.

Figured I’d say as well, usually there are reserve copies of all the books at different libraries on campus. You can avoid buying them by just getting them there if you want. It’s also more convenient IMO, as you don’t have to carry and keep track of a book with you.

Would I be able to check out books from the library? What’s the policy on that?

How much should I expect to pay if I buy a textbook from another student? Around $100?

Will I actually need to buy all 3 textbooks for English 125?

Yeah, you can check them out. The way it works is you walk up to one of the desks where people are working, and you hand them a sheet with a number corresponding to the book on it. You can look these numbers up on UM library website. Depending on the reserve, some can be checked out for 2 hours, some for 4, and some for 3 days. Returning an hour late is a $1 fee, but if you’re studying for a final or something, you might just except a couple dollars fee to keep it. Usually you have to wait 15 min before checking it out again, but if you have someone studying with you then just use their ID.

How much you should pay for a textbook from another student depends on the textbook. Hardly any cost $100 new even. There’s a CoE book exchange in the second week of classes or something I think, and you can look up all the prices for all the books somewhere. A link 'll get sent out sometime.

Awesome, thanks Vlad.

Wow, Math 217 book new on amazon for only $20… not bad at all!

Amazon is probably the best place to buy books.

“Wow, Math 217 book new on amazon for only $20… not bad at all!”

Treat that book well and sell it to a book store to make a profit :)

Do people buy there books before their first class or wait for the first day and the syllabus to buy their books in case the teacher changed the book?

In most cases, you can go through the first week or week and a half of class sans textbook, and professors should let you know ahead of time if that’s not the case. It’s always the safe way to go to get them early, though. The textbooks very rarely change.
