How do I calculate my GPA?

I got my weighted grade out of 100 but how do I convert it to a GPA?

You’ll have to use all the grades on your transcript. Every school weights differently, so use unweighted grades.

For a one-credit class, let

A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = 0

(For a half-credit class, A=2, B=1.5, etc.)
Add up all your grade points and divide by the number of credits attempted.

Use your weighted GPA; let’s say a 95-
95 * 4= 380
380/100= 3.8
GPA: 3.8

Wait, which GPA scale is used, the A = 90-100 = 4.0 scale, or the A = 93-96 = 4.0 scale?

My county doesn’t do 4.0 GPA scales, but it says that the “commonly used” GPA is the A = 90-100 = 4.0 one. College Board seems to think otherwise.

I don’t agree with #3 … to match a school with a traditional GPA you need to convert each course grade and then figure out your average.

For example, all 93 averages are not the same … the courses could be …

93, 93, 93, 93, 93, and 93 … or
87. 99, 87, 99, 87, and 99

these are both 93 averages but should yield different GPAs.

I’d recommend A = 93-100 without worrying about pluses or minuses. From what I’ve seen, 4.0 usually starts at 93/94. In high school, 90 is usually not given a 4.0. It’s an A- if it’s considered an A at all, but you may as well just count it as a B and know that your GPA would be higher on a scale with A minuses. It’s better to have an underestimate than an overestimate.

Is this just for your own personal use or are you going to report it to colleges? You’ll want to be more “careful” if it’s the latter…if you’re actually sending this to colleges, I’d recommend emailing them and asking them what high school grading scale you should use.

It seems like even unweighted GPA can be really subjective. At my high school 90-93 is an A-, but that counts as a 4.0 towards your GPA the same as an A or an A+ (97-100).

I sure hope GPA doesn’t get recalculated by colleges to compensate for A- grades. If that’s true, there goes the 4.0 I thought I had…

Different schools having different grading scales isn’t subjective exactly, but grading itself is almost inherently subjective.

My school does

94-100 = A = 4.0
85-93 = B = 3.0

and colleges won’t know this because my school only puts A or B or whatever on our transcript, and not a percentage. Which is sort of frustrating.

Our school’s conversions:

97-100: 4.25
93-96: 4.0
90-92: 3.75
87-89: 3.25
84-86: 3.0
80-83: 2.75

And I’m not sure how it goes from there haha. We only submit weighted GPA’s to colleges.

My grading scale is as follows:
A: 95-100
A-: 90-94
B+: 87-89
B: 84-86
B-: 80-83
C+: 77-79
C: 74-76
C-: 70-73
D: 65-69
F: < 65
