How Do I Compare To Other Applicants?

Hello!

I am a junior in high school with (compared to others in my school) basic classes and mediocre grades. I am worried that I won’t be admitted to a good medical college if, compared to others in my grade, I am lackluster in grades, standardized tests, and extracurricular activities. I also don’t have a passion or talent while many of my friends and peers have something going for them. What are my chances of getting into a good college (except ivy league)?

Grade: Junior
GPA (unweighted): 3.3
SAT: 1360 (Essay 6|6|6)
ACT: 29 (Essay score hasn’t come out yet)
AP Classes (AP Score): AP Government (2), AP Computer Science (3), [this year] AP AB Calc (expected to be 3-4), taking 2 AP classes senior year
Extracurricular Activities: Volunteered at library for a year (no documentation of proof with me), Internship at a Courthouse (one summer), Internship at a VA Hospital (one summer), Worked at Kroger (4 months), Currently working at Kumon (5 months), Web design team (2 years, in charge of some graphics and coding for school’s website)

I’m curious to see how I fair against other students. Personally I think I’m a train wreck and will not be accepted by the dream schools I want to apply to (Emory University, GA Tech). Thanks!

You are quite below the average for emory, especially with regard to grades

Yeah, I understand that. However, I was just curious as to what I can do to make myself a better college applicant and also any medical schools to recommend in Georgia that I would be able to perform well in that would help me become what I want to be: a Pediatric Cardiologist?

You do realize you don’t apply to medical school straight out of high school, right? The good news is that your high school record isn’t what’s important in medical school applications. You get a chance to start over as an undergrad, and you can apply for medical school from any undergraduate university not just the “top” ones.

Read Cal Newport’s books and start learning how to be a better student now, so you can get straight A’s as an undergrad.

Yeah, I know that I don’t go straight to med school. Are you serious about medical school applications not caring about high school record? Because even so, I was absolutely prepared to do my best to excel in senior year and undergrad. This is great news, thanks!

Honestly, your stats are pretty good. Definitely not mediocre on a national average basis. But it looks like you are looking at top schools. I would say really emphasize your EC’s in your applications because some are quite impressive for a high schooler. I would think about retaking your ACT (and work hard on your grades of course).

In addition, make sure you apply to some back-up schools. It would suck to only apply to schools like Emory and GT, not get accepted, and be forced into a community college when you have stats like yours.
