How do I decide whether I need an MBA or not?

Hello everyone,

I feel that many people just want an MBA to add a degree to their resume, or because they feel that it will make them CEOs and instantly rich.

Therefore, my question is quite simple: how do I tell if I need an MBA or not? What should I expect to learn, and what problems would I learn to think about n solve?

I'd really appreciate your honest opinion.

bump, bump

If you get stuck and can’t move up, go and get a MBA. It’s really simple.

are you in the workplace now? or are you still in undergrad? What field do you want to end up in? Are you in a field you find you’re stuck in (either can’t move up or can’t move fields w/out a masters)?

I am currently working as a network engineer for IT in an oil company, and I am currently considering career options and how to climb up the ladder. I don’t mind that the company’s core business is different from my area.

There are people in the company who argue that you don’t need a degree to hold a high position, but also the CEO and many SR VPs have MBAs. So I’m just confused between the two options.

How old are the CEOo’s and SR VP’s? They may have come of age during the time when it was extremely fashionable and de rigueur to get an MBA. That doesn’t mean that the twenty-something cohort needs to.
