I am a senior in high school applying to UCLA and I would like to major in Communications. However, I see that the department is only open to junior applicants, and in the UC application, I can't choose it as my major. Am I supposed to declare a different major and then switch to communications when I am allowed to? Or am I supposed to go in Undeclared? I know what I want and I want the admissions officers to see that many of the courses I took in high school pertain to the communications studies major... but if I go in Undeclared, how do I let them know that I always had this major in mind?

Please and thanks :)

My daughter is a freshman at UCLA and just was accepted to the Communications Dept. She knew this was what she wanted and also knew she would have to wait until she was at UCLA to apply. So first off, you apply Undeclared. Thousands of students do this as many don’t know what they want to major in. I believe my daughter was Undeclared Humanities but you could also apply Undeclared Social Sciences (both of these are in the College of Letters and Sciences).

One you get to UCLA you start on your GE’s and start taking the lower deivision comm. studies requirements. You only need to complete 2 of those before you apply. You must have completed 45 UCLA units to apply. So most people can apply fall of their sophomore year as my daughter did. You can also apply in the sring of your sophomore year. My D applied in Sept. and found out in early Nov. that she was accepted to the major. It’s a good idea to have a back up major in mind as it is very competitive.

When you apply for the comm studies major they will only look at the classes you have taken at UCLA and your GPA in those classes. High School does not enter into it. No essays, no recommendations, no interview. Only your UCLA classes and GPA. Most important to keep your UCLA GPA high (at least 3.7, 3.9 even better).

For very detailed info go to the comm studies website and click “admission” on the left column. [Welcome To The Communication Studies Department — Communication Studies](http://www.commstudies.ucla.edu). Good luck!
