How do I distinguish summer hours from school year hours for an ongoing research experience?

I have an ongoing research experience for 3 years. During the school year, I go to the lab for 11-12 hours, but over the summer, I volunteer full time (40hrs/week for 8 weeks). What should I fill for the hours per week in common app? Should I average all my hours in a year (thats misleading and not representative of either)? What can I do to convey this activity most accurately?

I would split the research into two parts: school-year and summer. That way you can portray it most accurately.
