how do i get a job?

so...are these specific work study programs or channels you have to go through? i want to get a job on campus. does anyone hear have a job on campus? how is it working out for you?

Nope - just find something you'd like and go apply for it. Go directly to the employer - if you have work study, let them know when you apply and they'll set that up (you need to give them a form the work study office gives you).

what kind of jobs would you recommend? and what kind of jobs do you get more pay?

hmm - well, if you like to be up all night and have time to study or watch movies, check out Access Control at the dorms (swiping people's Bruincards between 9pm and 5am) or front desk at one of the dorms. Another pretty chill job is at the police dept. as a Community Service Officer (CSO). CSOs patrol the dorms and campus, escort people around after dark, and do general building security.
If you want to work in a medical-type job, there are jobs at the Ashe center (in the labs and such). There are plenty of student jobs on campus, and they're all very flexible in scheduling around classes and such. Pay is pretty much the same for most jobs on campus I've found.

thanks =] just wondering... can girls get jobs as CSO's?

^ yes of course

So... do i have to wait to get a job until the fall? or can i apply for doing the swiping thing at night now?

If you're definitely enrolled at UCLA, you can definitely apply over summer. I got a job on campus the summer before my freshman year (I was really bored lol)

do you live in LA or something?

I was a supervisor for Access, so I believe I'm a bit of an "authority" on the subject.

Access has serious ups and serious downs. I'll just laundry list:

Ups: Higher than average pay for on-campus work
+ Generally chill atmosphere
+ Flexible scheduling
++ Easy job
+++ Can study while at work
+++ Great place to meet people
++ Cheap and guaranteed summer housing ($8 a day)

Downs: The people you meet may hate you since you're a "Door Nazi"
- The job kills your sleep schedule
-- Most people gain weight due to stress and late night food runs
- Not all supervisors are equally easygoing on scheduling (I was generally willing to fix any schedule problems. Others just said, "Deal with it."
--- YOU WILL HAVE TO WORK FINALS WEEK. Everyone has to work at least a few crappy days.
-- Access is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You may be scheduled for Thanksgiving.

Also keep in mind that Access runs the desk at Covel, and you may be able to work there as well (OCH dispatch.) The people working there have even stranger hours. But, there you may get only day shifts if you're lucky.

Women cops? What'll they think of next, women doctors?

;)

haha nothing wrong with that ;)

You just don't want a hot female urologist. Oh the potential for embarrassment!

HAHAHA....

i have an on campus job and i like it. it's really chill, well depends on what shifts you get i guess. i work for event services, what i've basically been doing is watching our sneaks and 2 dollar movies while getting paid. haha and usually you'll have time to do your homework during your shifts unless you're a labor crew person. the pay is like any other on campus job, except for the food places. but yea. i also get weird hours so if you want something normal, just do the whole working in the food department haha. i would like to work for front desk though cuz of the perks. but oh well haha.

so, how can i get an application for access control or the other campus jobs? Do i have to physically go and get an app? b/c i'm from wisconsin...

Yeah, Access requires you to get an app. When you get to UCLA, go to Covel Commons and ask the desker for an application. They're always accepting apps, and turnover is reasonably high enough.

Just make sure that your application is complete, professional, and preferably typed. I read way too many apps that looked like the person did it in 15 minutes.
