How do I get into a top 10 computer science Masters Program?

I will be majoring in comp sci in undergrad, and I go to Portland state university, so it's not a top school or anything, but it's ABET accredited.

I am wondering, do I need a really good GPA? I can probably get a 3.5-3.7, and maybe a 3.9+ major GPA (but not cumulative).

What else do I need? Do I need a ton of extracurricular activities? Or work experience? Or maybe just research experience?

Yes, as good a gpa that you can manage. Higher in your major is great, some will focus on last 60 units more. You will want a very high GRE. Also, project and research as much as possibly be involved with. Many, if not all top 10 programs will expect you to have research experience. You will need to stand out in your program so that you have very good letters of recommendation. Try to do related summer research/REU. A meaningful internship may be okay, especially if you are going to get a Professional Masters. Extracurriculars do not matter at all, unless they are directly related, like robotics club and you actually did something. If you TA’d, that could be helpful if you are seeking a TA-ship to help you get some costs defrayed.

Also, what are some top 20 masters programs in comp sci that offer financial aid like TAing?

Did you grow up programming, doing robotics, etc? If not, getting into programming classes early into your education is important.

Use the advantages you have. You live near many high-tech firms in the “Silicon Forest.” Check if you have a career center and at the office for CS/engineering majors for advice in getting internships. Otherwise, ask your professors for help. If that doesn’t work, call up companies yourself.

The summers after sophomore and junior year, in addition to your internships, you should be studying for the GRE.
Great numbers on this exam can help land you good offers from grad schools.

Btw if you are female, there are some great scholarships out there for CS majors. Also, if you are female or URM Google has some great summer opportunities. I don’t remember the exact date, but you have to apply early for the following summer, and by early I think it’s October or so.
