How do I get into an intro class I need for my major?

I was just looking at the courses online. I hope to do a Middle Eastern Studies major with Arabic as my primary language.

One of the intro Arabic sections is full, and the others already have some students in them. I don't know how enrollment works, but I am concerned that these sections might fill up before I register. Is there any way that a prospective language major can make sure they get into the intro class they need? I'm more than willing to be flexible with the rest of my schedule.

Is this something I should just bring up with my FAME advisor, try to talk with someone in the department, or should I just assume that the other sections won't fill up?

i think that since we are first year students we don't have the seniority to get into classes first but i think if you talk to your FAME advisor about it it shouldn't be a problem. Plus, if the other classes aren't already filled, there is a good chance that they will not be full by the time we register. if they are, there is the option of speaking with the teacher of the class and see if he/she will allow you in. it can't hurt.

When you get to Emory, on about the second or third day you will be allowed to bid for classes on OPUS. It's a very complicated system, and I don't think anybody but the registrar really knows how it works. But basically here's the deal:

All the upperclassmen have registered for classes. In most cases, the classes won't fill up before the freshmen get a chance to register. The upperclassmen have what's called add/drop/swap right now, which means that we can add and change around our schedule as much as we like online so that we have exactly what we want before the freshmen register. So a couple more people could add into the class that you want, but it's not going to change too much before you get to Atlanta.

On whatever day you have registration, you will meet in the library in a computer lab with your FAME group, and you enter each class that you want into the computer. You assign a number of bid points out of 36 that you want for each class. The number is 36 no matter how many or few hours you choose to take. It's just like an auction. The more you want a class, the more points you should put onto it. It's not inconceivable that you would put all 36 points on one class if you really want it that bad. There are always people that choose to take that route. Likewise, you can put 0 points on a class like Bio 141, where you're almost guaranteed to get into a section.

You get to choose the actual time and professor for each class, if there are multiple sections, but if you don't put enough points on the class, and it fills, then you may get placed into a section with a professor that you don't want. Or you don't get into any section.

There will be people around to help you with OPUS on the day that you register, and you'll have at least 6 student advisors along with your FAME advisor who can help you out with classes and OPUS. Plus most of the Resident Hall Directors and FAME Staff advisors were Emory Undergrads as well, and they can help you out with OPUS.

One last thing: You have 2 weeks of add/drop/swap after classes start to change things around at your leisure. Literally it only takes a click of the mouse. Then there's another week where you can just drop a class with no academic penalty, if you don't like it, but you can't add another. Plus, in the last week of add/drop/swap, a lot of professors will overload 1 or 2 students into each class if they arent able to get into them through OPUS. If you don't get into a class by the time classes start, just show up to the class anyway and talk to the professor about overloading. In my experience, it works a lot better than emailing them.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

just curious, how did you check to see if the class was full or not?

i explained how to look at the updates course catalog here. it will show you if the classes are full or not.

dgebll -

Thanks a lot. Looks as if I should load up my points for the one or two classes I want the most.

dgebll,

Thanks for all your good advice/tips!
