I am a sophmore in high school and i have a 4.0, while taking all the honors and AP courses that i can. I have 3 varsity letters right now and am about to join the local Civil Air Patrol. Can anyone give me adivce on getting into the AFA and how I should start prepairing.

Sounds like you are off on the right track, nice job! Just keep doing what you are doing. Stay out of trouble; away from drugs and the booze. Civil Air Patrol is a good organization to get a PPL (that's how I did it) but never mention it to anyone, ever! The people in the organization take the whole military thing a bit too far at times and they look like total dorks. Do well on the ACT and you should be fine.

whats a PPL

Welcome, if you see the thread about congradulations 2012 you can see about 60 current members have been selected for the class of 2012, so you have come to a good place for advice. If you are a military dependent start thinking about attending Teen Aviation Camp. Your base youth center will have the information. Look for a good team sport you like, and participate fully. Keep your grades at B and above. Take challeging classes (hard math, hard science, hard english, hard history). Join a school club or class government and participate. Think about Boy Scouts, JROTC or CAP. Apply for and try and attend Summer Seminar. Stay tuned and keep asking good questions.

Thanks for the help.

No problem. As for CAP do your best you have time to make your Mitchell if you apply yourself. The admissions panel does pay attention to that. Potterfan (Daughter) was in CAP and made C/CMSgt, would have gotten Mitchell, but time ran out (read she had to attend I-Day). Got some very valuable experiences in CAP. Powered flights, Encampment, and leadership opportunities. She does keep her participation in CAP to herself at the Academy though. Someone will always arrive thinking they know it all becuase they were in charge at their CAP/JROTC unit, and it won't take long for them to be corrected.

PPL is your leadership experiences.

Thank you I'll keep that in mind.
Does anyone know anyother clubs/organizations that the AFA looks highly apon

You picked a slow morning becuase they are conducting recognition, and most of the Cadets are going to be busy until tonight. So here goes.

There isn't one right club. They want to see you sticking with something, and giving it your all. Most of the Cadets were in NHS, School Sports, etc., but some may never have participated in a school team sport. Depends on the school you attend. Bigger part is showing them you are well rounded. Daughters High School had no sports so she had to go all the way across town for Cross Country, and Track. She also took Tae Kwon Do, and Aikido all through school. A typical appoiontee will look like this

GPA 3.0 or above (USAFA will adjust your GPA by your school)
AP classes in Math,English,History, and Science
Sports Usually letter in a team sport (but can be something else)
SAT's Above 600
Leadership School Pres/VP, NHS, Key Club, JROTC etc.

You are doing well...just keep it up

I will keep all that in mind

By the way, the abbreviation PPL means Private Pilot License.

Can you get your PPL from CAP and how did yall go about getting a congress recomendation

Yes; and for the nomination you have to write an essay and fill-out an application given by the congressman of your district and/or the two senators of your state and following the application you would eventually have to go before a panel and interviewed, and if qualified you will receive a nomination.

P.S. In case you didn't know, you do this all in your Junior year.

Is there a lot of competition for the nominations

depends if your state and/or district is competitive. What state do you live in?

Georgia
Are you in the AFA.

Senators are the most competitive source you can get a nomination from (For Georgia there are hundreds of applicants). You may want to apply to your Congressman since not as competitive, but apply to both of them if you can.

If anyone else has any ideas/information that I could use during the process it would greatly apreciated

Air Force Academy has the official info.
Apply early, and apply for every nomination you are eligable for.

(slight thing: the Avg. GPA for appointees is somewhere in the 3.8 to 3.85 range)

How early do I need to apply? Junior or Senior year? and which semesters

Also, if you play a sport and want to play it at the academy as an intercollegiate athlete, I would recommend filling out the recruit questionnaire sometime during the coming summer or the start of your junior year
