How do I improve my ACT score (specifically Science and to a lesser extent, Reading)?

I recently took the ACT and got a 31 cumulative score. I got a 34 on English, a 32 on Math, a 31 on Reading, and a 28 on Science. I was wondering how I could improve my Science score. Are there any strategies or review books that will give you a score of 33 or above on Science? Did anyone improve their Science score tremendously? I know that I can improve my Math score easily and my English score is where I want it to be. I think I could raise my Reading score also but any input would be great.

Hey! I can potentially help you out. I’m no expert, but I scored a 33 on the science section in the March ACT. One thing I did was clear my head. That may seem ridiculous, but if your tense and unfocused, the science questions will really try and confuse you. In fact, science is the section that I’m most calm in. Take a deep breath and relax. Secondly, make sure you understand what the question is asking for. They sometimes like to thrown in extra unnessicary detail. Thirdly, pay extra attention to what graphs or tables it’s pointing out in the question. This way, you can immediately zero in on the graph/table right after the question and don’t have to scramble around looking for the awnser. Reading the passages in the science section is almost obsolete. It’s not nessicary, unless the question specifically mentions “In the passage…”. If you do these things, you’ll be pretty surprised how easily the senders come to you. This might be out of context, but can you please give me tips on the math section? I preformed abosultly awful on the math section(got a 24) which is down right embarrassing for me. I’m not sure why the math is so hard for me. I do very well in my math classes and preform well on tests in class. I would certainly say I’m better at math than your typical student. Not only that, but I feel like the ACT math section is relatively easy when I take it. Certainly my results show other wise. Does anyone have any tips for the math section? They may be the difference between getting accepted to one of my dream universities or getting flat out rejected. Thanks so much!

@JackLuzzy Hey dude,

My advice for the Math Section is to SLOW DOWN on questions 1-40. These questions are ridiculously easy; the reason people score low on this section is because they rush thru the easy questions, make careless mistakes, and then are stumped on questions 41-60. The thing about the math section is that it is very straight forward. You either know how to solve it or you don’t. Keep in mind that all questions carry the same weight so getting the easy ones done first is very important. If you don’t know how to solve something right away, SKIP IT FOR LATER because chances are you’ll know how to do the next few. I take a practice test and make flashcards of formulas when I have the time. Hope this helped! I’m taking it next week! o_0

@0br0123 Thanks! I’ll admit that I do tend to rush, especially on the easy ones. The main reason is because I fear not having enough time on the harder ones. Next one I take, I’ll make sure to remember to slow it down. Generally I don’t skip questions because I fear that I’ll accidently forget to come back to them. What I usually do is circle the question and then take a random guess on it, just in case I don’t have time to come back to it. Anyway thanks for the tips. Do you have any equations that are important to remembering besides pathagorean theorem, area equations, mid point of a line, distance of a line, and circumference of a circle? Anyway, I’d love to see how you do! I wish you the best of luck. You seem like you know quite a lot!

@JackLuzzy Good to hear! I agree with your method of circling and guessing in case you forget to come back. Some equations people usually forget are the distance formula, diagonal of a prism/ cube, and equation of a circle.
