So I just took the June 8th ACT this morning and am super worried that my proctor could possibly void my test. I do not cheat on tests... ever, but I took the ACT with writing today and my proctor was a total wacko. It was obviously his first time proctoring and he had no idea what he was doing and kept clicking on his computer during the test. At the end of the writing section he called time and then I finished writing the last word of my essay and put my pencil down (maybe 2 seconds after he said stop). He came over to my desk immediately after (I was at the front of the room) and he sternly said "I said stop" after I had finished writing. As everyone was leaving he made me stay after and said "you kept writing after I said stop" and I said "I'm sorry, I was just finishing the last word" and he said "well I said stop". He never said anything to me about possibly voiding my score, but I am really worried he might. What is the possibly (if there is any, one of my friends said they would have to notify you before you left) that they would void your score or report something about the test? I am super worried that something might happen!

From the ACT Technical Manual:
“When ACT plans to cancel an examinee’s test scores, it always notifies the examinee prior to taking this action. This notification includes information about the options available regarding the planned score cancellation, including procedures for appealing this decision.”

You would then have the option to appeal through written, binding arbitration. I wouldn’t worry about it now; if anything, just write down the specific details of what happened so that you don’t forget later.

That helps me relax some! But would the proctor have to notify me that he was reporting an irregularity? He seemed sort of on edge the whole test and a little bit “off” so I’m not sure if he was just that kind of guy that would say something again to make sure I wasn’t questioning his authority.

I think he is required to inform you if the answer document will not be scored.

Thank you so much for answering quickly! Now maybe I can start relaxing and enjoying summer!

He may be angry, but he may want want to go through the trouble to file a report himself. So he just express his anger on you. That’s it.

I think you are probably fine.

At most universities, no one will think twice about your finishing a word on an exam. The sole exceptions that I know are the military academies. When they say, “Pencils down” at the end of a test, it’s an order, and they mean immediately. In that circumstance, you could run into major trouble just for finishing a word. But I wouldn’t worry about your ACT.
