Hi,

I'm a homeschooled student applying to university this autumn. I need to learn Chemistry (I already did a Physics A-level). I've covered some GCSE Chemistry material, but wanted to study the subject in more detail and got the Zumdahl Chemistry book. I would like to ask:

-Can I start learning stuff from the Zumdahl book from scratch? Is there anything I need to know beforehand?

-How much of the book do I need to learn in order to have covered the equivalent of one year of high school chemistry? Do I need to go through the whole book, or should I skip specific topics?

Thanks ^^.

From the British side of things I can say that one year of high school chemistry is slightly less material than the AS material but I’m nit sure what to miss out so you should just learn AS chemistry and you should be fine.

Well, I already have the book, and I can’t return it, lol :), so how much of it should I cover? I don’t have a proper AS book, anyway, only a few GCSE ones.

P.S. I like your username :).

From my understanding Zumdahl is at least an A2 level Chemistry book if not higher, I’m not farmiliar with it that much but I think it’s beyond AS Level. Anyway I think that you should try to get your hands on an AS Chemistry book of some sort, and leave the Zumdahl for later.

So the Chemistry book isn’t just the only book which people use in high school, then? I asked in this thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/714988-textbooks-do-you-use-biology-chemistry-literature.html#post1062561619

and people said that they used it in class, so I thought that it was just a comprehensive textbook - the only book that most students used if they were studying chemistry.

As I said, I’m not farmiliar with that particular textbook as I’m doing A-Level and not in school in the US. If it’s a high school chemistry textbook then yes you can learn use it as your main textbook.

OK. How much of the book would I have to cover (which topics, or chapters?) if I wanted to do the equivalent of one year of high school chemistry?

Zumdahl is a college-level textbook. Why not just go through the whole thing supplemented with MIT OCW videos and lecture notes?

We use the Zumdahl book…and if my teacher didn’t make homework worth more than tests, I would not have an A. I can’t read from the book…nothing makes sense in it for me.

I’m probably going to ask my mum or some of her friends for help (they studied chemistry at university way back when…) which OCW course would you recommend I supplement it with?
