How Do I look? Chance Me

DUUDE,…coldguy…take AP Exam…U maybe able to supplement 4 ur poor 11th maks…:)

Sns911, I was thinking the same. (I even created another thread for it). Anyways, thankx. :)

I don’t think I should be commenting…cause I just applied, but don’t be too proud, I know guys who have gone VERY deep into their subjects done HUGE research projects…much larger than I thought was possible. I tried following…but it was hard for me. Your grades will get raised by 20-30 points according to the US system, but remember that everyone else’s will too! And just because you hate most of the sciences DOES NOT mean that you score low on them!!! India is awesome at studies, so pack your bags and get ready for a steep climb uphill.
The EC’s are cool, but keep going, and be chill wherever you get in! The people make the college and not the other way(It may sound a little cliche but it’s true!!)
BOL!!

I am new here and this is one of my first posts so thats great…

Anyways, codeguy, honestly, I don’t want you to get your hopes up. I am working (more like intern) with international admissions recruitment at Yale (I am an Indian student there… so yay!)… Anyways, there are thousands of applicants with your profile who apply to top colleges and even more students (esp at Stanford) with better achievments than yours at Comp. Science… There was this one guy who was invited for an internship at Yahoo! but he had loads for other concentrations like in Music and stuff; he got rejected by Stanford but got a likely from Yale… Anyways, my point is college admissions are more of a crapshoot…your grades can significantly hurt our chances, but you never know…
Best of Luck and be happy with wherever you get in …
Cheers man… PM me if you need more advice…

P.S. If you wanna increase your chances you can always get a green card, one guy (international) would not have stood a chance if he didn’t have that… LOL…JK… don’t do that…

quiverfox, Yea!! Sorry, I started feeling a little proud. :frowning: And yes! The students make up the college But there is a gap between opportunities available at different colleges. :)

Karchit, Thank you! You seem like a good person. The last person who I knew was selected at Yale had such a high nose that he never bothered to reply to any of my messages. :)

I will try my best to get those grades up. Rest is on Luck. :)

“Teacher Recs = Excellent
Essays = Excellent
Counselor Rec = Excellent”

So you’re saying that your essays are excellent a year before the topics are out? That’s umm, odd.

Chance me for
STANFORD [SCEA]- Low chance
Harvard- No chance
Brown- Low chance
Princeton- No chance
Yale- No chance
Cornell- Low chance
MIT- No chance
UCB- Decent chance ( But since you’re applying for aid, even UCB becomes a reach with all their budget problems)
UCLA-High chance
UICA- High chance
PURDUE- High chance
Northwestern- Decent chance
NYU- High chance
Rochester Institute of Technology- High chance
TEXAS A&M- High chance

Assuming you do get a 2300 in SAT, your profile is quite impressive. You should ask your counsellor to report the class average and your rank in your transcripts. Take SAT subject tests, and AP exams.

A lot depends on which school you come from in India, and how much is that school trusted by the US universities. I personally am from a top school in India and thus, have seen a lot of our students get into top universities while students from other schools, even with a better profile, get rejected.

I would say you have a pretty strong chance at a lot of your universities. You should aim high. Talking about universities like Harvard and MIT, it is impossible for anyone to chance you. I know someone who got into Harvard with a 2040 SAT score and also know someone who got rejected with a 2320. They are very unpredictable.

@Codeguy

I would assume RIT and TAMU are your safety picks (and last choices from your list).

Looks like you are quite well rounded. I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if you got into at least one of the Ivy’s you listed, and then some of the others. UCLA would almost be a safety pick as well.

Well done.

Good luck!

Sorry to say, but stop moaning on the IIT(JEE) level questions being tested in your 11th grade. It’s very common in India. My school timings in 11th and 12th grades were 6AM-10:30PM (sometimes, even longer). You have excellent ECs. So try to build up your HS percentage. That’s all I wanted to say.

^10.30 PM ? You have got to be kiding me !

Your school timings were 6:00 to 10:30.
I don’t mean to sound rude,
But mine is 7:00 to 1:30.

And thanks for the suggestion, will surely see to it.

Darn, didn’t see the P.M. :(

Mrinal, I second you. :D

10:30 P.M? Were you in a Jail school. :P

P.S- I love putting smilies. :D

Yea…schools in the Andhra Pradesh are sort of jails. I was a student in my school’s topmost class for IIT-JEE prep. The timings were very harsh. Believe me, I didn’t have any holidays whatsoever for two years (11th and 12th) except five days in the summer!

what are you doing now^^^

You asked me to chance you so here goes.
SAT I - getting 2300 in practice and actually getting it is not the same.

Saying you’re CEO of a website is downright stupid. You created a website, dude. Big deal. Don’t act like you rule the world. Just say it how it is. Maybe it’ll impress some people. It doesn’t impress me, and certainly will give the adcoms a little giggle.

You sound like a smart guy, but as it is with a lot of high school kids, you think you’re the boss cause you’re one step ahead of people in your high school. This has a high chance of showing through your essays. I’ve read some essays from Indian applicants (10-20) and a lot of them are complete trash. A lot of them come from people who are actually not that bad academically and intellectually but, end up saying trash like ‘I’m CEO’ or ‘I have a dream to create the biggest company’. So that’s the biggest problem with your application.

Also, you need fin aid. This is bad.

Best case scenario, if you prove to not be a ****** in your app and start sounding like a humble student who seeks intelligence and not a CEO of 5 companies on course to rule the world, get that 2300+, and churn out some badass essays, I’d say you have a good chance at
Brown, Princeton, Cornell

UCB, UCLA, Purdue dont give aid to internationals.
Not sure what UICA is.
Not sure about Northwestern, NYU, RIT and Texas A&M’s aid policy.

If you have a great great app, than maybe Harvard/Yale.

MIT/Stanford - next to no chance.

hey teslaboy, u mind answering this…
If I portray my interests in things OTHER THAN academics/******** then will it hamper my chances in to a university like MIT??
and is it true that if you have a SAT score over 2000/2100 then adcoms just skip that section(as they say:)).
Also @codeguy , I think your app is awesome, so trust yourself:)

@quivefox
There are no universities “like MIT” when it comes to Indian admissions.
With MIT, you won’t get in. Don’t bother trying.

If you want to make MIT, you’ll have to be a medalist at an International Olympiad. You have to be a person who knows with full confidence he’s going to come top 100-1000 in the IIT whether he studies or not. I am acquainted with most of the MIT undergrads who are Indian. They are all uniformly like that.

Dont waste your time “portraying” interest in anything. You won’t make MIT. SAT scores don’t matter at MIT. I know people who got in with an 1800 as well as a 2200. The only thing that matters is what I’ve already stated.

What if I do have an international medal:)(2 actually…I mean genuine international)

These “timings” are why Indians totally suck at sports – no one ever goes outside. Yet, if only you guys understood that the real key to Ivy admissions is, in fact, sports, you would dump all these cliche IT ECs and practice – and get great at – tennis or (more practically speaking) rowing. MIT loves rowers, for example. So, instead of bashing each other with ever greater IT accomplishments in a no-win arms race, row for a couple of hours a day and get really good at it and win national titles and show your times. MIT will lay down the red carpet. There, I’ve gone and done it on the Indian thread: told you the secret that the Americans have know to be true all along: start working your bodies, not your minds!!!
