How do I look for CSOM EA? Top Choice! Woo BC!

Alright how do my chances look for CSOM EA. BC is my top choice!

White male, New York
SAT: 630 CR; 690 M; 720 W (1320 and 2040)
Subject Tests: 690 Math 1; 650 US…
Rank: not sure but definately in top 20% (250 students, very competitive public)
Grades: all As except 2 Bs freshman year and 1 B junior year
6 AP’s by graduation (5 next year)
I got a 4 on APUSH this year

ECs:
-11 varsity letters by graduation (captain of two different sport teams next year)
-NHS; tutoring…
-a lot of community service (especially to two places where i go every week)
-held a job since freshman year
-academic summer program this summer too…

i will be retaking subject tests and taking the ACT in a couple months

Your CR is near the 25th%-tile, writing is above the 75th%-tile, math is about the 50th%-tile, subject tests are about average.

So on average, I’d say you have an average chance. 26% RD, 36% EA. (Per Fall '08 Stats)

Your ECs are good, but I think you should try to get your SATs up. The CSOM is harder to get in in than the rest of BC. Good luck!!

Your SATs and Class Rank are working against you but the rest of your application is REALLY solid.

Try to raise your SATs.

alright i will try! i have been preparing for the ACT for a while too and am really trying to get a good score so i can just send the ACT and not my SAT and subject tests (which aren’t the best). What score should i shoot for for the ACT, 32+?

people have gotten into BC from my school with my GPA and SAT (even lower) btw… if that means anything…

The CR score is the hardest one to nudge up, Ny. That’s the one you’ll need to bring up I think. I had the same problem – vocab killed me until I bought a couple of SAT books and just crammed it into my head.

Hey, reply to this so I get to be the one to bump you to 1000 posts!

haha woah 1000! thanks

yeah my problem with c.r. is the sentence completions and the ACT doesn’t have it so i think i would do better. im a little bit above the 25 percentile for BC for c.r. at the moment though… idk i love BC and really want to go=]

alright so would you say BC is a match or reach for me? (because i know it’s not a safety haha…)

I think you have a great chance!

I got in EA to CSOM this year (December 2008).

My stats were:
white male, CA
560 CR, 610 Writing, 740 Math Total=1910
730 U.S. History, 700 Math 2
top 5% of class at a not that competitive public high school
All A’s except 2 B’s freshman year
Total of 5 AP’s - 3 on both of the Ap’s last year.

EC:
I have a similiar list to you.

Write a really good essay and you will have a great chance.

Dear Ny0rker : When I read your two-way scores (630/690), my first reaction was that BC will be a stretch school for CSOM. Being in the Top 20% as opposed to Top 10% in a small class of 250 will also harm your application’s status. Remember that 85% of this year’s acceptance pool was a Top 10% performer in their High School. Your AP count (one as a junior) is light compared to other applicants for CSOM, but this might be a constraint from your High School. I would spend less time on your SAT II subject tests and more time trying to hit the 31/32 mark on the ACT exam.

Your extra curriculars are interesting and you will need to back those up with a quality essay to overcome your hard numbers that we have already discussed.

In reference to Harry1234, please do not bank on a 560 CR score as being acceptable. While Harry1234 might have made the BC connection with that score, there could have been a million variables (location, class rank, courses, essay) that might have offset the score. Congratulations to Harry1234, but that 560 CR score is in the bottom 10% of the accepted class.

okay thanks for the response scott! i am fairly confident i can get a 31 at least on the ACT.

hey, i got into csom ea this past year with similar scores (mine were a little lower). you look like a good candidate but by no means a shoe-in. I considered BC a reach for me and was absolutely shocked when I got in. I feel like a lot of the admissions process is based on luck so just keep your fingers crossed. Another thing that I think helped me was that I showed a lot of passion for a particular thing during high school, in my case music. They definitely look a lot more for quality of your activities than quantity and for the potential that you will continue those activities on campus and make an impact/contribution to the boston college community.

Just for comparison, I applied to CSOM EA this past year and it was my first (realistic) choice. I had:

SAT 2100-- CR 730, M 650, W 720
SAT II-- Math 1 660, Literature 700, Spanish 710
GPA of 3.67 at a very competitive public school-- sent 32 kids to Ivies this year, 70 kids to Top 20 Universities
Great essays, very good recs, good enough extra-currics, and okay community service.

I was rejected, not even deferred. I sent the admissions officer an e-mail (he knows my guidance counselor) asking if I could re-apply Regular Decision to the college of arts and sciences, because i had obviously been rejected from CSOM and he said no very politely. That’s how interested I was in the school lol. I’m going to Georgetown next year.

But every applicant is different and I’m sure you’ll do very well. Don’t get too worried-- make sure you let them know you are interested and tell them what you can offer to their school. Good luck!

oh wow that’s really surprising… congrats on Georgetown though! good luck there

lets bump this up after a few weeks haha

If this helps at all NY, I’m gonna be a freshman in CSOM this fall and was accepted RD. This is what I posted when i made a similar chance thread about a year ago…

GPA: 96
Rank: 10/350
SAT: math-730 CR-650
SAT II: Math 1-740 Math 2-680 Physics-700

Also was the national champion in my DECA event (V.business management) senior year.

My advice: Try to show off your passion for business. Also, make sure you are in the top 10% because if you are not it can really hurt your chances… Raise the SAT/ACT/Subject tests as high as you can, but don’t worry if you can’t. I only took the SAT I and subject tests once but that’s just me.

This past year over 30,000 kids applied to BC (not to mention CSOM is the most competitive school of them all). You are a solid applicant but so are many others! Keep working at the app. and good luck hope to see you in CSOM!

BC weighs your essay heavily- so write a stunning essay and you should have a decent shot. But from the looks of your current stats, it’s probably a reach. The valedictorian from my school this year was rejected by BC, and she applied to A&S. CSOM is considerably more competitive due to it’s highly regarded business program.

i got in with a lower SAT score but much higher subject test scores if that means anything
