I plan on applying to the Naval and Air Force Academies in the fall, how do I look so far?

Grade: 11

ACT Composite: 31

-Member (Also editor for a time) of School Newsletter
-Member of Yearbook committee (1 year)

-Commendations for Outstanding Achievement in a couple classes
-Student of the Year for English, so far two years running (Junior year awards haven't been awarded yet)
-2nd place regional winner of MESA wind energy challenge
-Runner-up in International Global Awareness Project
-Scored 86% on ACS Chem 1 test

-No sports, but I've taken 2 years of self-defense/aikido through the community college
-Pre-cal, trig, speech, music history, and next year calc 1 and 2, american democracy, econ, poli-sci through the community college

I've not done much community service, but mostly because I spend the majority of my first two months of summer (Mid-May to Early-July) working in the family business. Also, most clubs and sports don't have a presence at our school because A) we're small, less than 250 students, B) we're an odd school, we take college courses with our high school course and also to substitute some high school courses (what's called an early college high school)

No one here can tell you for sure one way or the other. That said, your credentials look fine.

Regarding sports, if you show passion and commitment for aikido, I think that would show the academies athleticism. But if its just attending a class here and there, well thats something else.

Theyre also looking for leadership and being capitan of a team or president of a club (with some real responsibilities) shows that. But there are other ways to lead.

Keep up the good work, get your teacher recs in now (before school lets out if possible) and you have a great chance.

Granted, I understand that no one can really be definite about it, I’m just looking to compare myself to other applicants for next fall. I’ve still got the summer before my senior year and my senior year before I go off to college.

Teacher rec’s in now? Do you mean to ask teacher’s for letters of rec, or to submit them now? (Right after I wrote this, I figured you probably meant asking teachers for them.)

Yes, you ask them but more importantly they need to know that the NA will send them a link so that they can complete the rec online - no letter. That said, your Sen and Rep might have a different system. It behoves you to research the application process in detail so nothing becomes a stumbling block.

Find an athletic program somewhere- join a swim team, a running program, SOMETHING.

you also need to demonstrate leadership- look into your local YMCA and see if you can be a swim coach for special olympics. Join a scouting group, or organize an event at school.

Academy will evaluate you on:
Academics
physical fitness [athletics factors into this]
leadership
