I was told by my school counselor that got into AP US History for my freshman year and all honors class. I’ll also be joining Harvard Model Congress and the debate team next year.
Is it true that it will be harder to get into a boarding school as a sophomore? Many of my friends told me that it will be more competitive. Also, what should I expect during an interview? What are some common questions they might ask? What are some things I should add to my curricular to increase my chance of being accepted?
Berkshire typically has a freshman class of 50-60 kids which then doubles to about 100-115 kids sophomore year. I’m a current student at Berkshire so feel free to pm me with any questions. Good luck!
Definitely apply! It is true for some schools that it is harder to get into boarding school as a sophomore. However, it’s not impossible. I was accepted this year for 10th grade at Andover and I’m very excited!! I wish the best of luck to you
You probably need an SSAT score in the nineties in order to have a reasonable chance for admission to Phillips Academy at Andover. Of course, even with an SSAT score of 99%, admission to Andover, Exeter & St. Paul’s School is not assured.
Grades, teacher recommendations, extra curricular activities, reason for wanting to attend boarding school & maturity level are also important admissions factors.
Reading the OP’s list, it seems you have some schools in a similar region and then you have SPS way up by itself in NH. Just be prepared to get questions about the grouping of school you are applying to, or why you are applying to only one up in NH when there are others.
Second question to OP: What are you passionate about? I see lots of stats but don’t see YOU in there.
Advice we heard from AO’s at several NE schools included this little tidbit: It’s not enough to say/write your are “Passionate” about sometime ( hockey, writing, chess club, computers, AI, Fortnite, etc). Rather, you must explain to the AO’s (especially in the essay) WHY you are passionate about your area of expertise, talents, and interest. It was not enough for Kiddo to state the awards earned via the ODP or training in that sport…Kiddo had to explain “Why I was passsionate”, “Why I loved Geometry and math competitions”, “Why I loved getting up at 4:40 for 6 years of my life”…what does 7-11 smell like on the highway at 5:30 AM and how that lead me to understand the difference between the middle Americans I would meet at Bob Evans in Ohio compared to the patrons at Starbucks at the crack of dawn. Make your story come to life…do not just recite facts and numbers like “Joe Friday “ (he was boring”. They want to know YOU not just your stats.
