How do I not get caught up in my "dream college?"

Hey guys –

I’m a current high school junior, and ever since I visited it this past summer, I have been obsessed with a particular college. I love the department of my intended major, I love the dorms, I love the campus and the general atmosphere – I have been dreaming about going to that one school ever since. But as college counseling begins (next month!), I will have to open my eyes to the wider array of colleges that I am going to apply to. How can I work towards getting into my “dream college” without hindering myself from seeing the benefits of others/setting myself up for disappointment if I don’t get into that “dream” school?

Tysm!

Figure out what appealed to you most about your dream school (sounds like the campus atmosphere and strength of department) and look for other schools that have similar aspects. I think you’ll find that many schools are more cookie-cutter than you would think, and you may find some colleges that you like too that you would be okay with attending if your dream school does not work out.
Are you willing to share its name? We might be able to help with suggestions of similar schools.

Yes, that is a good suggestion. Now that you know you are applying there, set it aside, don’t read about any
longer for now, get a list together for if you don’t get in, you need a few admits so you have choices. Kids your age are maturing and changing minds rapidly, give yourself allowance for that.
