How do I obtain water?

This is just another simple Freshman question... how do I get water? Whenever I work at my desk, I have become accustomed to a cool glass of water next to me. How will I get that at Cal?

Right now I am thinking that I'll buy a pitcher water filter to put in my fridge because I don't want to constantly buy water bottles, but if there is another way I'd love to hear it.

thanks

The sink?

I lived in a dorm at a small LAC and just got water from the bathroom faucet, then ran it through a filter.

Tap water in the Bay Area is pretty fantastic and clean to drink. I suggest keeping a pitcher that you can fill from the tap. Also, most floors have a water fountain on them.

If you are uncomfortable drinking tap water, you can buy a Brita filter. Those work pretty well.

Bay Area tap water is among the cleanest in the country. Drink it.

strong salmonella and cholera

edit: and ebola

I heard this a lot from the RAs, but I was pretty skeptical. I looked it up and found that San Francisco Public Utilities was ranked 33rd nationwide and San Francisco Regional Water did not have enough data published to be ranked.

I ended up buying and using a water filter even though people told me it was unnecessary.

Brita filter. Just fill it up at the water fountains.

Get your Brita and fill the water from the sink. Buying a mini-fridge always helps.

Cool cool, thanks for the advice

Berkeley is served by the East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD).

Per the source cavilier listed, our water isn’t as clean as people state. Using a water filter is always a good idea.

I’ve drank out of the tap for over a year – haven’t had anything happen to me yet.

Regardless of how it actually ranks, your body can put up with a lot. Think about how people survived before water treatment was available.

I’ve even drank some pretty bad water straight out of the taps – eg. Terre Haute, IN. Nothing happened there either.

In fact, they say not to drink the tap in Mexico, but the locals do it all the time. It’s just that their body has adapted. You should have little trouble adapting to the water in Berkeley. Once you have, drink up – it’s everywhere! I also like to add: unlike the water in many other places, it actually tastes nice. :)

I used to drink upstream river waters and they taste fine too =) Maybe some microorganisms in there, but no water is ever as refreshing as that.

@UpMagic: Wow, you drank from a natural source. You should try to drink from Strawberry Creek and tell us how it tastes, lol. I wonder if that water is safe :P

well

10char

wow, the Brita party looks so exciting…
yeah, its true, also, the people in other nations, like India, adapt to the water quality over there, but when others go to visit, they have to be really careful to boil/ filter the water before they drink it.

also, for the brita filters, they come in pitchers as well as a dispenser. I bought the dispenser because I thought it was more convenient, but whatever, its up to you

I love how people are complaining about the water quality in Berkeley when only 62% of the world has drinkable water at their disposal (not including the regional currency values of water either).

I love how there’s a person who could realistically be expected to be at UC Berkeley who thinks that someone else not having drinkable water negates my entitlement to complain that I am not satisfied with the characteristics of the drinkable water at my disposal.

Fallacy much?

You can complain and say whatever you want. I’m just voicing my thoughts and my own opinion just like you are. Real cute that you think your opinion has any premise as to who should attend UC Berkeley or not.

Edit: Anyways, to contribute to the thread topic, bathroom sinks are the easiest way to obtain water. Alternatively, if you live in Foothill, the dining commons are usually pretty lenient with you using the soft drink machines. There are also drinking fountains around the dorms which suffice as good water source as well.

Chaolin… the world is filled with a crazy amount of disparity… just kind of the nature of things. People complain about things from their own perspective, not that of someone else. I don’t know if it’s right or wrong… it just is what it is.

Anywho… thanks for actually answering my question :)
