I went to the USC bookstore website and they are only selling clothes and trojan athletics stuff.
Then I went to OASIS and went to booklists, but it said it wasn't available yet.

How do I find out which books I need to get?

I went to the USC bookstore website and they are only selling clothes and trojan athletics stuff.

How do I find out which books I need to get?

don’t order books until your first week of class.

OASIS will update with the booklists soon, and each book will either be labeled R (required) or O (optional). however, you will find that some professors will outright say during the first lecture that book XYZ is not actually required for the course.

also, do not buy your books from the bookstore unless they are a course reader, a custom publication, or a paperback novel for an english course. use websites like allbookstores.com and get used versions shipped to you.

Amazon is a better option than the bookstore, especially if you have Prime. It can be up to a $40 price difference in a lot of cases.

Ok, but will books not be needed during the first week of class? Won’t that be ordering too late?

When will an updated book list be available on OASIS? And is possible to check out any books from the school library for up to a semester?

The book lists are on your Oasis account as of today.

Yes, I saw. Thank you.

Usually not. You can go to your first class, see what books you actually need and pick them up that day or do one/two day shipping. I never really needed books until week 2; professors understand students wait to see what books are actually required.

You will be kicking yourself in the shins by ordering all your books now and discovering later two of the priciest ones are just “optional” to the course.

I just looked at the booklists on Oasis, and there’s a column that tells you if the book’s “Required” (R) or Optional (O). Is this new, or should I still wait to order books?

Wait. We’re saying this for a good reason! It’s not like we’re random people who haven’t been through USC before. They had that when I was an UG too and one class I had listed all books as R(equired) but we actually needed no books!

@ripemango did you even read my earlier response to you in this thread? i explicitly mentioned the R and O on OASIS…

^ It’s OK, they all have freshman jitters. That explains all the weird questions that keep popping up all over the USC board :)

my bad guys

Also, you should know that any book bought at the USC bookstore is returnable for full refund if returned by Friday of the first week of class (8/26). This means if you buy a book before classes start and learn you will not need it at those first class meetings, you should make sure to return it pronto.

The USC bookstore has some used copies for some courses, but they disappear very fast!

ripemango,
My son always ordered used textbooks from dealers at Amazon or from other used book sellers as soon as they were listed on Oasis, and saved $$$$$ over 4 years. Dont wait to buy the required books at USC, get them now.

he saved money even if some of the books weren’t needed for his classes?

^^what? He saved money by buying ALL his books online. He bought $ 150 textbooks for $75 for used editions, or even less, when he could find paperback, “international” editions. He never paid full price for a textbook, thus saving $$$$. And, he was able to sell them, through Amazon or Ebay, to other students looking to save $$, after he was done with them.

but as other posters said, not all the books on OASIS are truly required so would I still be saving money by getting them NOW online, when I actually won’t be buying some of them?

I think she said that accidentally?

Look, mango, I know you’re nervous but it’s not hard to understand:

Wait until the professor hands you the syllabus on the first day of class.
See what books she or he lists as required.
Go home after class and log onto Amazon or whatever textbook sight you choose to buy/rent from and get the books.
Choose quick shipping if you can; on Amazon it will still be cheaper.

Very easy!

Ok, so I am going to wait until the first day of class. I was confused because she said something like, “don’t wait til later order the textbooks NOW to save money”
