How do I plan a Vacation as a Community College Student when I don't have a car?

Just saying take your vacation after summer session and before Fall session when you have no school responsibilities.

I don’t think i’m even taking summer classes!

The point of having a job can be to help pay some of the expenses at your CC or to save to help with some of the expenses when you transfer to a 4 year college. My kids did not use the money they earned working over the summer during HS and college for vacations.

@happy1, but did you ever take your kids to see different places while they were growing up…to experience cities, museums, national parks or just experience something outside of your own community? I don’t think OP really got to do that (maybe a trip to Florida.) I get the sense that OP is not just wanting a vacation, per se, but to get out of a bubble. That’s educational, and broadening. It may be that practicalities will have to prevail for him/her, but I think the yearning to travel a bit is a healthy thing. Maybe OP will have to wait a few years, but is looking for encouragement and advice that can be put to good use eventually.

@inthegarden IMO education IS a very good use and will have the most long term value. I do recognize that the OP is looking to do something fun – but it is important to keep the long term view in mind and education should be a top priority.

If the OP has discretionary finds to take a trip, then that is great. But I’m not sure that a CC student living at home with no car should expend funds available to travel right now. Perhaps a exploring things in Lafayette IN such as the art museum, walking trails, or zoo or day trip to Chicago would be cost effective. I recognize that realism and practicality isn’t always the fun, desired, or uplifting response but that is a part of life and I would tell my own kids the same thing. There is a time and a place for everything. Of course the OP is free to take or leave any comments and spend money as he/she pleases.

And what I did or didn’t do with my kids is a private matter.

I thought you were retaking your intermediate algebra class that you got a D in? How many years are you planning to stay in school? If your not planning on taking summer classes it may take you a long time to reach your goals.

@3scoutsmom I’m just doing what my advisor recommends and see how my work with EdReady(a math program) goes this summer.I’m meeting with the transfer advisor at my school next week to see if retaking the class is still a good strategy even with the knowledge to prove I’m able to move on to the next math course. I don’t care how long it takes to get my degree as long as I don’t run out of financial aid, am learning and progressing, and things don’t interfere with school. If the goal was to rush so I could get out of school and get a Job then STEM would not be for me because it’s a lifestyle choice that requires passion and decidication. If that were the goal then I might as well work at a manufacturing plant or distribution center that pays well and gives career opportunities because where I live in Indiana Is one of the hubs for manufacturing. Someone who truely likes what they are learning enjoys it, appreciates it,and is thankful to have the opportunity to learn it no matter what age they are.

@happy1 the good news is that because I’m attending Communtiy college,my mom Is not married, and she is low income I have full pell grants and some state grants to pay for school but it is true that University is a lot more expensive and will have to pay more for it but that is a long time From now and it’s not even guaranteed I’ll transfer! I thought it was smart for @inthegarden asked you if you ever took your kids on vacations because you can’t tell someone to not be able to do anything fun because of this or that because not everyone is lucky to have parents or family take them on vacations and there’s not much to do in Lafayette especially in the summer becuase most of the Purdue students are gone and there’s no sports games to go see so not everyone is lucky to live in a big city!

@SuperGeo5999 Frankly it is none of your business or anyone else’s busienss what I have or haven’t done with my kids, where I live etc. I am trying to answer your question as honestly as I can and that’s it. As I said, you are free to do as you wish. It is my opinion that if you do want to attend a 4 year college then I would save up as best I can for when it happens. You can take or leave my advice.

I’m just going to block you from my CC list so I won’t see your posts. I wish you the best. I hope you get the help you need. And if you choose to use your money on a vacation, then enjoy.

Another thing is that it’s not fair to see everyone else get to go on vacations! Why do people wanna brag about how there life is better than others? I’m tired of seeing that on Facebook! I don’t wanna hear, life isn’t fair! We made this world the way it is so we are in control and could make it fair if we wanted to!

MODERATOR’S NOTE: I’m going to close this thread because I don’t think there is anything to be added at this point.
