How do I prepare for the SSAT?

I’ve studied for the SSAT for about 2-3 months and am taking the test next month. I’ve taken plenty of practice tests and read/worked through 3 practice books. But no matter how many times I study or tips I follow, nothing ever seems to work; i.e. everything I try seems to be a waste of time. I don’t have much time left until testing day and I really need help-!! Any helpful tips???

What score are you getting?

I ordered the Official Guide to the Upper Level SSAT and took two practice tests (these weren’t the only ones I took). On the first one, I got a 716 for Quantitative, 711 for Reading, and 692 for Vocabulary. On my second test, I got a 740 for Quantitative, a 681 for Reading, and 717 for Vocabulary.

@haeyung_365 What are the percentiles of the sections? (thats what matters)

I haven’t taken the actual test yet, so I don’t know what percentile I’m in…

I’d just like to know how I can study effectively for the test

come on-you dont need to ask an anonymous forum. what do you think people do to prepare for tests like the SSAT?

Try quizlet to help with vocabulary words.

I second the quizlet recommendation. Also, doing a bit consistently each night is better than inconsistent binging.

@Center I don’t know why there is a need to be rude. I think it’s smart idea to ask for advice and help from other people who have been through it and have experience! If you have the resources, why not use them to your advantage!

I would reccomend looking up “SSAT Advice” or “SSAT practice tips” or something along those lines in the search bar. You will find so so many forums with this question already answered. Best of luck and if you have any questions about the admissions process to boarding school, feel free to pm me:)

Thank you~!

I’ve taken the SSAT twice and got a 98 percentile overall but here is what I can say about studying vocab. It’s good that you have been preparing from before because it takes a long time to improve your score. I took the first one in June and just took it in October. My percentile went up by 1, even though I memorized over 700 words. That’s because there are so many words in this world that the chances of having a word that you studied, on the test is very low. The quantitative I found fairly easy. As long as you have basic concepts up till Algebra I and a bit of Geometry, you’ll do well. And the reading, well, my score went down and I am still confused why. I studied and read a lot. I suggest reading classics like Great Expectations as well as doing practice tests on the SSAT portal online. Good luck!

For SSAT vocab, my kid used a program that he got access to through his middle school, www.membean.com. I think you can sign up for the “SAT package” or something like that for $50 or so, and my kid said it really helped.

There was a thread where @PlantKid recommended this SSAT 500 words Quizlet deck: https://quizlet.com/8062978/ssat-500-words-flash-cards/
I highly recommend it as well
