I've been trying to keep up with the FAQ, but don't remember this coming up. My son's 150 words about an EC included numerous references to a musical work. It was in italics in the Word document, but the italics went away when it was pasted into the Common App form. Is there a way to italicize in the Common App form?

No, there isn't. It's a technical limitation in the Common App - no formatting (italics, bold, etc.) appears.

does the "no italics" just apply for copying/pasting into the text box's, or does it go for situations when you actually "upload" a document?

According to the MLA Handbook, the proper way to italicize something if there is no way to format the text is the place the words between two underscores (), so it would be _Waiting for Godot. But this is aesthetically displeasing, so it really is just up to you and what you prefer.

I was able to save the essay as a pdf document and then when I uploaded it, the italics remained intact.

Also, just FYI, be sure to enable pop ups...I think if you don't, the essay won't upload.
