How Do I Request A Dorm At Exeter?

I'm particularly interested in either Abbot or Cilley Hall. Either one would be great! But how do I go about requesting them? Who do I write to? And what do I say?

I was wondering about this too. I don’t want to request a specific dorm but I want to be put in a brick dorm, not a house.

Check the FAQ’s on Blackboard. It says you don’t choose a dorm, though if you have a particular need, you can let them know. Everything I’ve read here and from Exeter students elsewhere suggests that the school nearly always does a great job placing students in dorms.

same here…Can new lowers request singles since im an extremely light sleeper??

Hey man, on the FAQ from Black Board, it says that you should send “any specific housing needs in writing to the Dean’s Office as soon as possible.” In the letter, you might just want to say something like, "I would like to be placed in either Cilley of Abbot b/c of their locations and close proximity to my areas of interest on campus (or something like that).

I hope that helps.

Please do not request a dorm. The school does a great job placing kids into the right places.

Never mind guys, I found out how to request. You email the dean of students.

That’s very possible. Just send the dean of students an email saying that.

Thanks, I already did that haha…

The thing is the school doesn’t do “a great job” placing kids in the right places. They don’t actually try to match people with certain places they pretty much put you where they have room. If you’re coming in in a grade other than prep they’ll often put you in a house. But there are too many people for them to specifically place certain people together. And I know that next year there are a lot of girls coming in so there going to be a few more emergency doubles and triples for girls than there have been. If you want to know anything about any specific dorm or about singles or doubles or general dorm reputation if you are thinking about requesting feel free to PM me.

Are boys over-enrolled as well?

I don’t think so.

almost there, that is simply not true. The school does take into consideration people’s interests and mixes students. How would it be if one grade had a too-similar group of students (i.e., all lax players?) There is no dorm like that … clearly there is some kind of diversity in these choices. So why request a dorm, when you don’t have any idea what Abbot or Cilley are like (“dorm reputations” from an outsider’s view are complete b/s. How would outsiders know what a dorm is like unless they’ve been in it?) Yes, some dorms might have better facilities than others, but the people matter much more.

But Exeter would never accept a group of students with very similar interests into one grade.

@the chosen
I’ve actually talked to multiple people about this and everyone (including the dean of residential life) has said that its pretty much random. They generally try to put siblings in the same dorms and if there are no other students of color in the dorm they won’t put you there and all that. but they don’t place you by your interests which IS why you don’t have a dorm full of lax players (although there are some with much more than others) because what is the probability of randomly choosing all of the lax players and putting them into a dorm.

And about dorm reputations I’m not saying you should come in with assumptions about every dorm BUT each dorm has a different environment and some people would be happier in one over another. For example if there was a dorm (there is) that started out with like ten preps and only ended up with two staying until senior year (and one came in as a new prep). And this year had 14 preps coming in (almost half of the dorm because everyone moved out) and only had four who wanted to stay (although some of them did have problems moving out). There are reasons for all of these things. And if I had known about this I (and I know a lot of other people who would) probably would have requested a different dorm.

@ The Chosen: I know a bunch of guys in Cilley and Abbot.

I agree that it’s somewhat random, but not entirely.

I live in the dorm farthest from the gym. A lot of kids in my dorm do computer science/math club/etc, much more than in most other dorms.

This year, a new upper moved out of my dorm after fall term since he really liked sports and most of his friends were in Cilley.

I have to say that dorm environment depends mostly on who you hang out with in the dorm. Groups in the dorm don’t really interact with each other much on a daily basis, except for big events like dorm traditions and other things.

Am I allowed to request a single for specific reasons? I don’t care what dorm (obviously it should be girls) but I just want a single.

You should email the dean and let them know why you want a single. Send them a recording of you snoring really loudly or something. :)

When is the right time to request dorms or specific room types (doubles, singles)?

The time to do it is ASAP. They take requests seriously, so I suggest you email the dean of students now before all the good dorms with singles or doubles are taken.

First of all, why Abbot or Cilley? They are 2 very different dorms, 2 very different environments and 2 very different sets of people. The more common decision is Cilley or Wentworth.
First decide why you want a specific dorm. I requested mine because I knew I wanted a single and I knew it was one of the nicer dorms on campus.
Then, all I did was send an email in the “contact us” section of the website or something…
