How do I stop procrastinating so much?

<p>I've always been a procrastinator, but it's never stopped me from doing well in school. I just can't sit down and actually write an essay unless I have loads of pressure on me, and then I FREAK OUT and get it done, and do it very well. I know that since it is working, it shouldn't be a big deal, but I'm sick of sitting and "working" for hours only to write something in a stressful burst at 11:30pm. This is an especially bad habit to continue as I head towards more difficult assignments in college. </p>

<p>How can I get myself to work earlier, without immense pressure?</p>

<p>I haven’t had much success with reducing my own procrastination, but things like changing your environment so it’s more conducive to writing, or changing how you procrastinate (like maybe napping or doing something with a friend instead of reading random things) might help.</p>

<p>one of the reasons procrastination is so endemic nowadays has to do with how easy it is for us to fool ourselves into wasting lots of time i think. no one in their right mind would pick up a whole * book * to read when they have a paper to write, but doing something like reading a short article or watching a yt video or checking forums, etc., on the other hand are much easier to justify to ourselves. But then you end up justifying a lot of small detours until finally the pressure builds to the point where you can’t justify anymore things, and then in a frantic and unpleasant moment you start on whatever you have to do. which is a sad and distressing way to start anything i think. so how do we avoid this?</p>

<p>I’m going to post something below that pointed out some things to me about procrastination which seemed true, and which made it seem less scary and inevitable.</p>

<p>Try rewarding yourself in some way after completing the task. For instance, don’t do whatever it is you typically spend your time on while procrastinating until you are finished with your schoolwork. It’s self-discipline and if you can develop it early, all the better.</p>
