How do I tell colleges this?

I got into a really good summer research program, but due to some family issues I am not able to attend. Can I still put this on my resume? If so how?

I don’t think that’s a good idea. Congratulations on getting into the program and I’m sorry you’re having difficulties attending, but I think that stating “accepted into XYZ program but didn’t attend” on your resume looks bad, whether or not it was a family/personal issue that prevented you from doing so. It makes you look like you’re not dedicated, and it might be an awkward thing to explain when you’re asked about it in an interview. Unless you’ve got a speech prepared, your best bet is to try to get in next year.

If it’s like TASP or something, go for it…

I’m a senior though so I can’t do it next year. And what is TSAP?

It’s a “prestigious” summer program.

RSI is another one… It’s harder to get into than MIT.

If it wasn’t one of these two programs, you probably shouldn’t bother putting it on your application, but that’s just my two cents.
