How do I use this summer?

Hey guys! My dream school has always been Princeton, and I'm in my summer before my junior year. I have a 4.67 GPA, and I wanted to know how I can utilize this summer to it's fullest potential.

i reached 4th prestige in Call of Duty: World at War the summer before my senior year…the summer before my junior year, i was probably engaged in more fruitless pursuits

Princeton 2014!

haha in all seriousness, relax, there isn’t much you can do as a high school student, if you’re brilliant you’ll get in

did you do any internships/community service?

summer before juninor year, i didn’t do anything. before senior year i did boys’ state and volunteered a bit, not much tho

I didn’t really do anything during any summer while I was in high school, to tell you the truth. I relaxed, played some games, hung out with friends, went to some parties here and there, and overall just enjoyed myself.

if you’re a guy, you’re summer goal should be to get laid

I did coursework every summer and governor’s school the summer before senior year =) Other than that, I travelled, and was sure to explain why the travelling was important to me in the summer section of Princeton’s application (though I can’t say whether it was useful or just annoying to the adcom, haha).

i did a 9 week internship at local biotech firm, worked my butt off but it might have been the thing that got me in? idk
most kids in my area try for some kind of internship [san diego is biotech center] but if that doesn’t work out at least get a job, hopefully one you can carry on throughout the school year

parties, messing around, video games, lulz

I’d say don’t sweat it. The most I did was attend a week-long summer camp (the fun type, not the math type or anything), and still got into Princeton, so…yeah. If you’re Princeton material, your work during the school year will show it. It certainly doesn’t hurt to volunteer, get a job or internship, etc., but it’s also not necessary.

Your gpa is too low. You need to get it up to at LEAST 4.8 in order to get consideration. Work on that this summer.

Relax and do whatever you love to do! Enjoy the summer! Schools like to see you pursue a passion, so whatever your passion is, just have fun doing that.

Since you are quite young (not even a junior yet), I would also recommend spending some time this summer researching other schools. While Princeton definitely has its appeal, and is obviously a wonderful school (I’m going there this fall), there are many schools out there. If Princeton has “always” been your dream school you may not have looked at it with a discerning eye before becoming enamored of it.

I’m not saying it won’t end up being your first choice at the end of the whole process, I’m just saying while you have the time you might want to put in some more research to confirm. Also, unless you are an athletic recruit (in which case you probably wouldn’t be asking how to spend your summer or have a 4.67 GPA) you will have to apply to other places as well as Princeton. Since people traditionally start college visits junior year, you could start researching some of your other application choices.

Good luck and hopefully I’ll see you at Princeton in a couple years!

Agree with last post. I spent my summers either practicing piano 5+ hours/day (9-10, 10-11) or at ballet summer intensives (11-12 CPYB, 12-college Magnus Midwest). I also sent in an arts supplement for each art.

Yeah work on your GPA, it’ll never hurt, although it will only help so much. At the end of the day what distinguishes one applicant with a 2400 and a 4.0 unweighted (mild exaggeration, but not far off) from another are the ECs, so find something you love and do it. Also, keep in mind that Princeton REALLY likes the arts, especially music, dance, and theatre.

Yo Walnut, I know you’re looking for more threads to brag about how awesome you are at piano and ballet, but in case you haven’t noticed, the summer’s over for people in high school.

lulz

newest newb delivers the smackdown yet again :)
