We are looking at boarding schools very far from our home, and several of them are in remote areas that aren't walking distance to any services. I started thinking about all of the driving I do at this point to get my child to the orthodontist, haircuts, etc.
How do kids take care of these issues while at BS?

I always just scheduled them for when I was home on vacation

Living over 1000 miles from my D in a remote location, from our experience it is not a problem. Like arky, the routine things are often done on breaks, although Sunday haircuts while out shopping are not uncommon. Orthodontics, though may require an arrangement with a local practioner. I'm sure someone will chime in whose kid has had to deal with that.

For routine medical things, my D's campus has a small clinic on site. For example, I found out that the state where she is now requires a followup chicken pox booster 10 years after the first shot, so they will administer it there.

I did almost everything on vacation, except for the occassional hair blowout before prom, etc.

I could barely do my own laundry; getting doctor's appointments were far beyond my skill level.

Of course the routine stuff is accomplished while they are home. However, we have had the occasion to visit an outside Doc while away at school. Transportation was provided by her advisor. As I recall all paper work was done by fax.

My daughter was sick this past week and the school nurse was in contact with me every day. They gave her things like Benedryl to make her more comfortable and they also arranged for her to see a Doctor. The Doctor called me from his office during the examination and went over the possibilities for treatment. All in all, although I miss her more since she is sick, the school has handled things very well.

For regular things like orthodontics, doctor and dentist visits, we scheduled them during breaks.
