I am taking my D to look at OWU in March. We are from Illinois and do not know anyone who has gone there. What do students say about the school?

I don’t have much info for you, but DS#1 looked there too and it ended up one of his top two choices. Kids were friendly, loved the class he sat in on. He liked that there was a little more town nearby–the campus intersects a main drag of Delaware. Some of the Ohio LACs are fairly isolated/insular.

I’m curious how to distinguish between all the great Ohio LACs. DS#1 looked at OWU, Denison, Kenyon, and Wooster. I’ve been hearing good things about Wittenberg, so I think DS#2 will look there.

Anybody else have opinions/info comparing and contrasting Witt with these others?

I applied to Kenyon, Ohio Wesleyan, and Oberlin. My close friend applied to Denison, and another to Wooster. I also applied to Baldwin-Wallace. I visited Kenyon, OWU, and BW, and my friend visited Denison once and plans on a second visit.

I loved the atmosphere of all the schools I went to. Ohio Wesleyan was really friendly, I loved the English class I sat in on, I loved the campus, the food was decent, and I loved the honors dorms. I only have three negative things to say about OWU: I thought a group of girls at an SLU (small living unit) were rude, I can’t stand Phillips hall (home of Religion, Psychology, Journalism, and Education), and students were smart but not “intellectual” like Obies.

That being said, I liked OWU more than Kenyon. Kenyon was far prettier, on the outside, but I couldn’t stand the dorms. The students and faculty were also just as nice. The reason I don’t particularly like Kenyon is that the Frat scene seemed much more in control of social events, even though OWU gives Frat Housing options and Kenyon does not.

My friend loved Denison more than Kenyon. She said the dorms were new and livable, she thought everyone was nice, and she liked the general atmosphere of campus.

When it comes to Wittenberg, I haven’t heard much. I know it’s a decent school, but it doesn’t have specialties (that I’m aware of) like the other Ohio LAC’s (Oberlin is Religion, English, Music; Kenyon is Drama, English; OWU is the natural sciences and is trying to reinvent itself with a stellar International Studies program; Wooster is a jack-of-all-trades because of it’s IS; Denison is also strong in English and has respectable foreign language departments). It also has, according to CollegeBoard.com, lower academic averages than the Ohio Five. It’s still better than a school like Hiram or Baldwin-Wallace.

Also, I got a letter from OWU a while back about a visit to a seminar lead by the “Ohio Six” - evidentially Wittenberg might be joining the consortium. I haven’t heard anything else about that, though.

I applied to a total of eight schools, four of which are top 25 according to USNWR. I really like OWU, which is why it’s one of my top three choices. I’m hoping I get into Oberlin, which I would choose over OWU. The only reason is that Ohio Wesleyan is a science school. They regularly send kids to top-notch grad schools in the sciences and pre-prof programs. Oberlin is focused more on the humanities. Otherwise, Ohio Wesleyan is a great school, and the new president seems to be trying his best to bring it’s image back from a former president.

Delaware is also a nice little town. It’s part of the reason I could actually see myself at OWU. Add to that its proximity to Columbus, and OWU’s large diversity, and I’d easily choose it over Kenyon, Denison, or Wooster.

A relative of mine visited the school and she thought the people were really super nice. She did feel a certain amount of culture shock–she was somewhat freaked out by seeing lots of anti-choice billboards on the way there, even though she is a Republican, and she saw more heavy people than she is used to seeing.
