How do Letters of Continued Interest work?

What are they and when do you submit them? I plan on applying to Stanford early action. What does a letter of continued interest look like?

Also, I have an MD who’s willing to write a letter for me. Since I already filled out the other recommender for most of my schools, how should I send the MD letter? Can the MD directly email the admissions officer or how does it work? Do I send it via snail mail (and have it signed)?

Letters of continued interest are only needed if you are waitlisted at a school and are interested in staying on the wait list at the end of the admissions cycle.

@sybbie719 ok thank you. So how can I send these colleges the MD LOR?

If you are deferred in the early round or put on a wait list in the RD round any letter of continued interested should come from you. The idea of that letter is to 1) reaffirm your interest in the college and 2) let them know if you have any additional MEANINGFUL achievements since your application. The letter (typically an email) should be short and sweet. Its not an opportunity to send in another essay or additional LORs that the school did not ask for.

Stanford specifically states they want two LORs from teachers, and unless you’re applying to fine arts, they don’t seem to have provisions for anything extra. If the MD was not your teacher, I’d check with the admission office before submitting that recommendation.
