How do low grades during the first marking period affect my chance for ED?

Hi am a senior and am getting ready to apply ED to NYU Stern. However, my grades this marking period (our school goes by quarters) are somewhat low. I am in 5 AP classes and one honors class. Due to my hard schedule and the college process, my grades have slumped a bit. I have mostly b’s and b+'s in my classes. My GPA will not decrease since B+ in AP Classes is a 4.33 and I currently have a 4.15.

I am aware that NYU Stern will see my first marking period grades and was wondering, how much will these low grades for this quarter affect my chances for ED? Could these lowish grades be a reason for me to get rejected?

Any help is appreciated.

Since your current GPA is actually higher than your GPA of the first 3 years, then it should be fine.

It would only matter if you had exceptional grades (All A’s for example), and then first quarter had all B’s or C’s etc.

I’ve heard people on this forum say that the committee will cal the school counselor to check up on first quarter grades if they are split on a decision. Since your current GPA is actually higher, you should be fine.

If your grades now are reflective of your grades in the past couple of years or better, shouldn’t be a problem.

@rdeng2614 Thanks for responding. So for this marking periood my GPA will be around a 4.2-4.25. Last year I had a 4.33. Wonder if that will look bad?

I always start out with B+ and then gets A’s after the first marking period, so this is normal for me, but you think that it wont look that bad for colleges? I am honestly pretty concerned right not, because these are the most up to date grades.

^overall I have only a 4.15, so it still is > than my GPA

Are these the finalized grades your school is sending to NYU?

From what I’ve seen on their website and online, it doesn’t exactly say they require first quarter grades, but that you can send them in (if you think they’re good), and if they’re good, they may potentially help your application.

They are just for the first marking period, but are final for that quarter. I thought it would look suspicious to not send them, I have heard from my guidance counselor.

The question is what did your UW GPA do? Many schools recompute the GPA taking out weighting because it varies so much from school to school. What does “slumped a bit” mean?

My UW is much lower. Probably a 3.4 vs. a 3.73 last year. However this year I am taking 5 AP classes vs last year which was 2 AP and 3 honors.

During the first marking period, my grades are always like this(around a B+ at the start) because if I then get an A- the next marking period, then An A- the second and B+ the first equals out to an A-.

Im not doing any worse than I regularly do in school, its just that I am afraid since colleges that I am applying early to will only see my first marking period grade, that image of a B+ average will stick with them.
Is it possible to not send first marking period grades? or would this look suspicous?

@“Erin’s Dad”

Your GC will send your first period/semester grades (as required by the school). If not they will call to get them. At this point work on what you can influence - your grades from here on out.
