how do meal plans work

10 meals a week, does that mean they give you like 10 cards a week and if u don't use the cards in that week, they get trashed? or are u given like all your # of meals for the semester and use it whenever u like?

and what do ppl think about 10 meals? i heard eating out isn't THAT much more expensive then what it costs for each meal of the plan. And do most students eat out for lunch? or do they choose to commute back to their building for lunch?

you can do meals per week or flex meal plan ( certain number per semester)

if you do per week and dont use them, you lose them. You use your nyu id, not meal cards. most freshmen eat in dining halls unless they are rich. Weinstein is across the street from silver (the building most of your classes will be in) so most go there for lunch, or to kimmel, which is also in wsp. Eating out isn't that much more expensive, but your forced to be on a meal plan unless you get apartment style, and most people just eat lunch and dinner, so if you choose to eat lunch out side of dining hall you wont be using 10 a week and thus will be wasting money.

btw, what is "declining dollar" ??

depending on the meal plan you get, nyu gives a certain amount, that can be used in the dining halls to purchase food, drinks, medicine, starbucks, w/e

current NYU student here:
meal plans work like this-- lets say you have 10meals a week plan. that means you can swipe into any of the dining halls 10x in a week. so you could have lunch and dinner 5 days a week and that wpuld be using your 10meals. declining dollars are an amount of cash on your NYU card. think of it like a debit card. declining dollars can only be used on food items at the store such as cereal, milk, laundry detergent, candy, etc. and if you wanted to bring a friend into the dining hall or if you wanted to eat in the dining after you ran out of your 10 meal points then you could use $8.95 of your dining dollars to eat in the dining hall.

NOTE: with a regular meal plan you can't swipe in twice in the same period. so you can't go to lunch at 12pm at one dining hall and then go to lunch at 2pm at another dining hall. however, with a flex meal plan you are able to do this. hope that helped.

does a flex meal plan cost more?

does anyone else think "declining dollar" is a depressing term?
