I was wondering how to decorate my dorm room. Are we actually allowed to put posters on the wall? I saw a lot of Breakfast at Tiffany's posters while taking virtual tours. What are the most popular posters that you're seen in your friends' dorms? Are we allowed to put up pretty lights? Different curtains? Thanks!

It’s not military school. You can decorate however you like; Lights and curtains included. Just keep in mind that you have to return it exactly how you found it. Some even paint their walls (only to repaint them white at the end of the year). It’s up to you.

Styles depend on people. I kept my walls pretty bland but the hallways were manic in my suite. Color-printed images were our thing, not full-sized posters.

As for the “popular” poster thing…I don’t even know what that means. Last year the blue/red Obama “Change” was pretty ‘in vogue’ I guess. There are no cool/uncool posters. Put up what you like. Don’t be a goddamn poser putting french posters or obscure movies/bands to give yourself an air (though plenty of people do that).

I would recommend you stay away from Che Guevara and “legalize weed” but that’s just because those people usually turn out dull as hell and I’ve seen enough of those to last a lifetime. Goddamned hippies.

Hahah thats awesome. Go liberalism! I must befriend these hippies.

Tastelessly and classlessly.

Most common poster: John Belushi in the “College” sweatshirt, from Animal House.

Put up what you want to look at day after day, rather than what you think will help you fit in. Everyone likes uniqueness and personality. Maybe some mementos from home, maybe some photos, maybe some posters of stuff that’s particularly close to your heart. At this point I have a bunch of framed images of nature, either exceptional photography or watercolors, which I like even better than my U2 tour poster (or even my picture of Napoleon’s coronation, which at least was somewhat original). I also have a Peruvian alpaca rug from my trip there, which doesn’t serve its manufactured purpose (due to a large oriental rug I got sophomore year, which has survived in good shape), but serves very well as a wall hanging.

Do me a favor and DON’T just buy posters 'cause they “look cool.” You’ll end up with the same Shep Fairey Obama, Tupac, movie poster as everyone else. Then you’ll come off as some personality-less shtick who just wants to fit in.

Put stuff up that means something to you. I had alot of my photography work–mostly landscapes from home. and a few mementos from my campaign work on my wall last year. The coolest/best decorated rooms have that personal touch…

My personal favorite was a friend who did gold foil cutouts of various figures and pasted them to her wall.

Oh… and about cool lights, icicle lights work surprisingly well as mood lighting… and you’ll get sick of the fluorescent lighting really quickly

Is it ok to stick your country’s flag if you are an international student?

yeah, put up whatever the *** defines no, this is no college application, people don’t like you for what your symbols are, they like you if you have different symbols to everyone else and are original. I knew someone with a map of the world on his wall, he scribbled out a couple of countries for fun and wrote all over it, it looked like ■■■, but it was original.

In my apartment, we currently have a big set of rainbow christmas lights ringing the tops of the walls in the living room, and that’s our lighting in there during parties. It works great. Plus, less decoration to do during December :)
