How do my chances look for SLE?

Hey everyone,

I am a junior at a public high school in southern California. I am really interested in attending West Point and it would also be an honor to. I am just curious to see how “great” you have to be in order to be selected to spend a week during the summer at West Point.

Location: southern California
Ethnicity: Asian American
Gender: Male

GPA: 4.0 UW/ 4.59W
Class Rank: 1/567
ACT: C30 E28 M33 R28 S29
SAT: none
PSAT: none (going to take this Wednesday)

Extracurriculars:

  • Soon to be Eagle Scout
  • Senior Patrol Leader for 3 yrs in my troop
  • Varsity Tennis for 3 years (80% chance I’ll be captain this year)
  • Interact Club
  • Recently started fencing (prob it will be better to not include this)

I have about 50~60 service hours under my belt.

So how do my chances look? I have heard from somewhere that selection for SLE and West Point itself depends on the geography. Am I located in a place where there are a lot other applicants? How can I get more info on the geographical aspect of the selection process?

Thank you in advance!!

Don’t worry if you are not selected for SLE as it has no bearing on whether or not you’ll be selected for admission. There are simply more requests for SLE than there are openings, so not everyone is able to attend.

Speaking to admissions to West Point itself, not SLE. Each US Congressman, Senator and the VP of the US have the ability to nominate up to 10 candidates. At any point in time these politicians can essentially select 5 cadets across all four classes assuming their selection is academically and physically qualified. This might be 1 out of the 10 or 2 out of the 10 or none if they have used up all 5 spots. This fills up most of the class. The Academy can also select from nominated candidates a limited number who were not their congressman’s top choice. So there is most definitely a geographical component to admissions. Some congressional districts have a lot of candidates / competition, some do not

You have a good chance of being selected for SLE.
