I'm referring to schools like Columbia, Stanford, HYP, Carnegie Mellon, etc.

My school does some crazy GPA system so I don't know how it stacks up against other applicants. I'm a junior right now. My rank is just about top 5%.

AP Biology A-
Honors Geometry/Honors Algebra II B+/A-
History A
English A-
Gym A
Spanish I A+
C++/Tech Draw A/B+

Sophomore:
AP Chemistry B+
AP Statistics B
AP US History B+
Honors Precalculus B+
Honors English B-
Gym A+
Spanish II A+

Junior (Projected):
AP Physics C: Mechanics A

I would prefer to know what your GPA and SAT/ACT scores are before making a judgment on anything to do with college admissions, but on the basis of what I can see here, your grades aren’t too bad. Your participation in APs is good, but remember, an A is always better than a B in the same subject (i.e. an A in AP Calculus BC is better than a B in AP Calculus BC) - this is obvious, but you should keep this in mind - don’t settle for that B.

In general (at my school and schools near mine at least), Gym and electives do not count towards your gpa (my school is weird though). Likewise, that string of B’s sophomore year may have hurt you a bit. Im not exactly sure where your GPA would be but it doesn’t seem bad (probably not the best but not out of the question for ivies/etc., be good to keep up the A’s). A 2200+ would look nice/bring up your academics. It would be helpful if you could calculate your own GPA using your school’s scale.

Does your school have grade deflation?
I hate when that happens.
If you have a 2350+ SAT, you are looking good!
Make sure to talk to your counselor in regards to your GPA, and grades.
Seems like a very tough high school.

Rank is what matters, not GPA. If he’s top 5% with all of those Bs, he goes to a school with substantial grade deflation.

I think much will depend on scores, ECs and whether this is a school sending many to top colleges which would be the case for most where those grades would make you top 5%. If your school send 25% to ivies and you have the scores, you clearly have a shot.

That said, HYPSC are very, very tough for the unhooked at any school who are not very top of class.

REDROSES I LOVE YOU.
Same thing with me!
I am top 10%- 5% but GRADE DEFLATION!!!
My SAT is 2370, but I really want to try out for a 2400.
That will explain that I am not a slacker, right?

Haha, no one was questioning you lebron…not yet, anyway >_>

A lot of schools dont factor gym into their GPA anyway.

And there is grade deflation at my high school, but only partially. Two or three teachers will teach the same honors course, with one giving 15 minutes of homework a night, and another giving 90. They show up as identical on the transcript, but the courses are anything but. I got shafted sophomore year with a 3-hour-a-night teacher while my classmates breezed through the same class with a different teacher who let them play Age of Empires in class.

And Lebron, don’t seek confirmation. You’re smart, be confident about it! I got a 2260 and am happy with it. A 2370 will be good enough for any school(any!).
