This summer i will be going to the Stanford EPGY institutes for geometry. I also was accepted to do volunteer work at the planetarium of the virginia living museum, so i expect to do at least over 100 hours of volunteer work there. Next year, i will also be joining a robotics team, starting a computer programming club, and ill try to get some leadership positions in French Club and the programming club ill make. We had elections for Tri-M today but i didnt get elected for anything X-(... How good does this look so far? Anything else i should focus on?

It looks good. Yeah you really need to slot in some leadership positions. Alot of awards and a big list of ECs but no leadership. But you're a rising junior right? Then i guess that makes sense. Some leadership positions in junior/senior years and that'll be good.
You seem to look already rounded out by sports/music/science so that's all great!
Oh and get moe volunteering experiences - not just at one place at the planetarium. Volunteer at different places, differnt situations to balance things out.
The adcoms seem to really like well rounded/ leadership people and you are definetly heading into that direction.
goodluck!

what would be a good number of leadership positions? I was the team captain of my JV jets team this year if that counts.

You know, no offence, but a lot of your EC's are junk. THey have no substance like positions or something special. Sure, you did well on an exam. You got an award for a subject. So what? Colleges want to see a person passionate about something. Concentrate on something and expand on that. You're grades are good, but make sure to raise that SAT score by next year. Don't worry. You are a sophomore, so you have a lot of time to work on it. Then you have a good chance. Good luck.

we need scores. 196 PSAT index is not entirely impressive for top schools. really, here is what i have seen to be acceptable ivy league scores:

SAT I (Old)- 1450+ for Ivy Leagues. its good to have the score at 1450 or above, and even then its still up in the air.

SAT I (New)- 2150+ for the same reason. not that you cant get in with a lower score, but because it would require some great stuff on the app, or URM status.

ACT- 33+ is good.

SAT 2's- 700+ all around

I highly recommend getting involved with an olympiad of sorts, math, bio, chem, physics, anything. scoring nicely on the AMC or AIME is good for science majors. get involved with research and volunteer work, stuff that stands out.

hmmmm...Well how many leadership positions should i take? Next year, I might be able to get one in french club, computer programming club, and if im lucky, ill be elected captain of varsity JETS and science bowl team, although i doubt it since there will be some seniors on both of them. If it is a near absolute necessity that i get more, ill humiliate myself as much as it takes to become class president senior year. It really ****es me off though. From what ive seen of clubs at my school, elections are usually popularity contests, and a lot of the people who do get elected do little work, and colleges just dont seem to recognize this. Anyway, does anyone know a page I could look at with the stats of a bunch of people who got accepted into an Ivy? Ive seen a few here, but id like a long list if anyone knows any.

For long lists of stats...you may want to try the individual school threads here on CC. A while ago, when decisions came out, most college threads had some sort of "decisions" thread. People generally posted "accepted/denied...and then followed by their stats."

Just looking at what you have so far, you definitely need higher SAT scores. Also, you need to focus a bit more on your EC's. You have a good variety...but this doesn't show your focus/interest. What do you want to major in? or what are your interests? try to gear towards doing something related to that field. Show committment in your EC as well...colleges don't like it when you do something one year and then switch to something else the next year.

I want to major in science/engineering. The three things i wanted to focus on were music, science, and computers. Problem is, my school isnt really science and computer oriented. Those competitions i did were pretty much the only things my school had to offer me in those areas. I was very lucky to do science bowl too. I was the only sophomore on the team and i was surprised that my physics teacher didnt pick a senior instead. Thats why next year, i wanna start a comp programming club. Im also going to join a robotics team as a programmer, thanks to someone on this board who got me in touch with a team. The only club i havent joined yet so far that id actually want to do is Mu Alpha Theta. However, u have to be taking an AP in math to do it and since im taking Honors pre-calc next year instead of AP stats, looks like i wont be able to do it until senior year. Does anyone know some other competitions/clubs/research opportunities that I could do outside of school?
As for my SAT score, im pretty sure ill be able to bring it up. I recently bought a ti-89 and ill be taking a prep course in september. The geometry course at stanford ill be taking will help too. When i took the PSAT last october, it was the first time I took it, so i was kind of unprepared.

You can do alot of things..create your own club...I did..and it looks good..You being Founder and all..At my school you are inducted into Mu Alpha Theta based on your overall GPA and that of the math classes you've taken..but they begin inducting when you take precal..so I guess its different at other schools..
