How do parents and student both sign FAFSA?

Just breezed through the online FAFSA. I really like that link to the IRS, makes things nice and easy and consistent.

So, I am finished! (Yay!) and I want to electronically sign the thing and submit it, by entering pin... and normally I would just enter mine, then enter student's, but gosh those warnings... "don't disclose to anyone" and you swear on your mother's grave that you are who you say you are and will be subject to $20,000 fine etc etc... ok, so I don't type in the student's pin.. but he is in Boston and I am in NC, so how do we both enter our pins? (I am so paranoid I think ultimately they could determine the IP address of where the pin was entered and they could tell that I entered the pin.. which would make my son subject to a $20,000 fine or 30 years in jail whichever came first!!)

So can the student sign it electronically with his pin and submit the completed FAFSA without parent signature? Or do both parent and student need to enter their respective pins at the same time? I am not going to print out a signature page and mail it in.

You can sign your part and then the student can log in from where ever they are to sign thier part. Thats how we always do ours. I go thru it all and make sure its all filled in correctly and then let the student know he can log in and sign his part and submit.

You’re doing FAFSA now? Is your son applying for aid for this semester or the spring?

He wants to apply for scholarships next semester (Spring) that are offered for a study abroad/internship type of program he wants to take. They require FAFSA to even apply for the scholarship. I haven’t even been filling out FAFSA because our cash + investments are too high to qualify for FA. I am not complaining, but with no jobs and zero interest rates, what looks like a lot of money is not enough to last us for the rest of our lives. His assets are certainly much lower now than when he was a freshman, so doesn’t hurt to try.

I tried to submit the completed form with my pin only and it wouldn’t take it. I was just a little frustrated at that moment. I am sure we will figure it out one way or another.

Your son need to apply for a PIN as well. Once he has it, he logs in and esigns the FAFSA. I seriously doubt they are going to be checking location/IP addresses though  The penalties are for committing fraud - ie. receiving federal student aid based on knowingly fraudulent FAFSA data.

Your son can sign the FAFSA with his PIN from ANY computer. The “signature” states it is to verify that the information contained on the FAFSA is accurate. Our kids sometimes did their signature from some other part of the country (like when they were in college far away)…we told them READ IT FIRST…then sign it. (Lesson in this household…ALWAYS read things before you sign them). Your kiddo can read/sign from any place.
