S plans to take the equivalent of algebra 2 at a community college, because his public high school has integrated math. Having been in an excellent accelerated math program at a private middle school, he knows the importance of taking a formal alg. 2 course. The problem is the scheduling ... WAY too many hours a week in a night course! We are just going to try to find a decent distance-learning course. While CC sounds good --- and in our state, districts do pay for it for jr./sr. students in many cases --- fitting it into a teen's schedule can be very difficult. For that reason, I object to it being used as an "instead of" that gets schools off the hook (meaning they don't have to offer higher-level courses). If kids can't get a class during regular school hours, it is unfair to EXPECT them to do it at night (if they choose, that's one thing ... but for it to be the only way to get courses that ought to be offered in the high school, it's another).

Actually, the equivalent of CC colleges in Wisconsin are UW 2 year colleges. In the Kenosha area, that would be UW Parkside. And if you take the college prep classes at either the UW 2 years or the tech schools, the credits ARE supposed to transfer. But you have to choose carefully to make sure the class you are taking is transferable to the UW System schools.
