how do people dress in college?

I'm just wondering b/c my school is such a... well let's just say people look like they've stepped from an Abercrombie catalogue or whatever. I've heard people in college just like to wear sweats, and during finals week everyone is in pjs. Is that true? also, do girls like to "dress up" as much as they did in HS? Meaning the pancake-style makeup, huge dangly earrings, heels, etc.

I don't know about you, but I see myself just wearing cargo shorts and tee-shirts everyday.

eh, you can't really say people dress one way or another, because there are so many different students, especially at big state schools. you'll find all kinds of styles - artsy, hipster, abercrombie/preppy, casual, whatever. at most schools people do take a very relaxed approach and go to class in sweats and pj's. at harvard i noticed most people dressed casually and modestly but also knew how to present themselves. there was more of a mature feeling there (i.e. styles not really dictated by pop culture or what kind of music you listen to).

It really depends on what schools you go to.

at my schools, lots of girls dress up in a classic way for classes, they want to look nice.

Most people who go to top colleges seem to hate Abercrombie. So if you are an average CC-er (who goes to a top college), you wont see much a&f presence.

T-shirts, shorts, iPod and flip-flops.

If you're looking to fit in, the above post is right on about ipods. Everyone has a friggin ipod.

Another trend is buying overpriced The North Face gear and trouting around campus like you're on your way to go mountain climbing in the Himalayas.

You will see jocks, hippies playing guitar, abercrombie boys and girls, emos, nerds, etc.

Also be prepared to hear overuse of the phrase "not gonna lie" - "that's sooo random!!!11" - "I'm sooooo druuunkkkkk"

What about the good old birthday suit?

Hey! I love my North Face Jacket. It was only like $80 :)

OH my goodness, "i'm not gonna lie" is so... overused. i'm sick of it.

At my S's school everyone dresses pretty much the same.

Midshipmen generally wear one of four classes of uniform while on Academy grounds. The wearing of civilian clothes, traditionally known as being in "mufti" or "civvies", is a class privilege. (For example, fourth classmen must go on liberty in Service Dress Blue or Summer White, while other midshipmen may wear civilian clothes.) First classmen may wear civvies in the barracks after 1600. General uniform are described below:

Working Uniforms. Known as the Uniform of the Day (UOD), this is the core uniform that midshipmen wear. This uniform varies by season. During the warm weather months, midshipmen wear Service Khakis, comprised of a short-sleeve shirt, long pants, black shoes, and a garrison or "fore and aft" cap. Officers wear the traditional "high pressure cover", so-called because of its tight fit around the head. During cold weather months, the UOD changes to Winter Blue, which includes a heavier black long-sleeve shirt and pants, black shoes, and a black garrison cap or white high-pressure hat. Topcoats include the convoy coat in winter, or the A-Jacket in spring and fall.

Service Dress. This is the equivalent of a business suit, and is worn for more important occasions such as special dinners, job interviews, parades, and inspections. The most recognized service dress uniform is Service Dress Blue, which includes a black suit coat (with sleeve stripes signifying rank), black pants, white shirt, and black neck tie. During warm weather months, there are Service Dress Whites, known as "chokers" due to the high collar on the men's uniform, and Summer Whites, similar to the Service Khaki, but in white. (In each of these instances, women may replace the pants with a skirt.)

Formal or Dinner Dress. Worn during formal occasions such as the June Ball or Christmas Ball, formal dress uniforms are comparable to black tie in the civilian world. Short coats, black bow ties, and gold cummerbunds for men, and long skirts and frilled shirts for women are hallmarks of these distinctive uniforms. The dinner dress jacket is white in the summer and black in the winter, while the pants (or skirt) and shoes are always black.

Other. These include physical training or PT gear, coveralls, and other uniforms for specialized occasions.

In addition to uniforms, midshipmen wear different insignia (to indicate class and major), designators (to reflect their enrollment in the Naval Reserve or one of the service specific "military option" programs), and ribbons (which represent personal decorations, unit commendations, and service awards).

The Princeton's 361 guide actually spends a noteable amount of time on how people at each school dress. xD (Personally, I'll be happy as long as I'm not the only person at my school who dresses preppy.)

If you go to a Service Academy, then of course everyone is going to wear the same thing...a uniform.

From visiting colleges I get the feeling that people wear what they did in high school, but a little more grown-up. For example, skirts that are a little longer than the width of a belt. (Then again that was at a party school, hehe.)

I also noticed that there are a lot more sweaters at college! Is this just me or is it some kind of phenomenon.

I found college to be more casual dress than high school.

A lot of people at my high school were absolutely obsessed with brand names, at college, not so much...

people in college wear whatever the **** they want...especially people at wesleyan.

I'm a t-shirt and jeans type of person.. and I'm feeling REALLY self conscious as I step off the plane and into my hotel. Some people look like they stepped off a magazine cover. ..T_T

^yes for t-shirt and jeans (mostly rock band shirts and places I have been and stuff i've been in.)

What do people at Cornell wear?

^^^ thick jackets with sweaters on underneath i'm guessing. boots are likely as well.

"I'm a t-shirt and jeans type of person.. and I'm feeling REALLY self conscious as I step off the plane and into my hotel. Some people look like they stepped off a magazine cover. ..T_T"

you will find a lot of people who look like they stepped off a magazine cover at UVa.
