how do people get 800 on the reading section?

seriously, i cant top 680 and some people are getting 800s...its weird...because that last section with the passage 1 and passage 2 have really hard questions!!! i usually miss like 6 questions in that...is there any way to tackle those comparative passages?? any tips or strategies would be really helpful!

Strategies work different for each person. Some people look for key words, underline important parts, etc. I didn't do any of those and still got 800; if you are like me strategies like those could actually hurt your score. There's a pertinent recent thread in Test Preparation general talk, the title is "800 CR People Help!!"; you could check some strategies there and try them all to see what works better for you. The most important, no matter what tactics you take: try to get interested in the passage and practise a lot!

focus on the passage,
approach it dauntlessly and learn how to love them
&
most important in my opinion...study word lists...the more you can the better it is
...800 CR mates have really solid vocabulary with a handful of exceptions

The hurdle I had to overcome to get that 800 was the overthinking trap. I am naturally pretty good at CR because I read a lot and English is my strong point, but I always missed a few questions on standardized tests. My teacher taught me to pick the most straightforward answer choice. We all know that there is a "too easy" answer choice. But there is also an answer choice meant to trap the overthinker. You have to have some degree of natural ability to distinguish between the overthinker choice and the real answer, but just knowing it is there can help some. Good luck!
Word lists help if you don't have a strong vocabulary. I didn't use them but a lot of people find them useful so perhaps try those?

My trouble is regular comprehension questions.

Sometimes I feel like I totally get it, and don't. Or they are so picky in the words they select, like that whole debacle of nation or something like that on the October SAT.

I feel the same way...i can read it, but sometimes i have no idea what the heck they are talking about

b4nnd, i know what you mean. there's always one choice that hints beyond the passage, and it tempts you to make an assumption, which, even though may seem valid, is NOT in the text.

i could get 800's on CR if it weren't for the vocab. :( i always end up getting 760-780 cuz i don't bother memorizing words.

I did, even though i missed 2 :)

yo tambien ; )

does anyone know which is the best word list?? i mean is it of barrons, or kaplans or that of the princeton review ??

hmmm hot prospects+ word power made easy's list....

I always get at least 2 questions wrong in each of the reading sections. I want to cut this down to 3 questions off on the whole reading, but I just don't know what it is that won't allow me to get there. I can limit the very hard questions down to two answers, but I always end up choosing the wrong one for at least two. I'm tempted to just go against my instincts for the very hard questions, but that feels very unnatural, as you might guess. Any suggestions ?
