How do people get 800's on CR????

It's amazing. Truly unbelievable. How do you guys know what the best answer is, not the second-best answer when answer passage questions? Is it just innate? OR just amazing readers. Getting a 800 on math and writing is much more easy, but reading, no way. What's your secret?

Practice, learn what the questions are asking for, find trends. It’ll become second nature to answer them.

Not that hard once you practice. Went from 500-700 just doing practice questions and learning vocab. Statistically speaking, 800 writing is actually harder.

^ Amazing motivation bro, to know that other people have accomplished it. I’m currently at 580 CR and looking to boost it up to 700+.

What have you done? Simply practice, and review errors?

Basically I went through Direct Hits Vol 1 and 2, and looked through some other vocabulary lists on the internet (try Princeton Review Hit Parade, etc…). After this I was usually missing 0 to 1 vocab per test.

The reading comprehension questions were my real problem. I found that every once in a while though, I would get a passage I was good at and answer all the questions correctly (normally I would miss like 4-5 questions). These passages were ones that I was innately interested in, like astronomy or physics. I then reasoned that if I could force myself to be interested in the passage I would perform artificially well. It worked!

If you read through the passage telling yourself it is stupid and boring, you will most definitely not do well on the questions. However if you read through the passage telling yourself subconsciously that it is exciting, you will do well on the questions. This change of mindset takes practice.

I’ll be sure to incorporate your advice in my next practice session. Thanks!

Oh, also, did you mark line references and solve while you read the passage, or did you read for the main idea and then approach the questions?

I don’t know why people like to read back and forth in the passages, because I tend to lose focus. But I guess reading the whole thing and then answering the questions takes up a lot of time

I went from 580 to 720 by reading a lot of books and going through direct hits, volume 1 and 2. I only got 1 vocab question wrong on the october SAT, but 6 passage based questions. I think one of the best advice for the passage questions is to make sure that your answer is 100% supported by the passage. If it is not, or is not relavent to the question, then it is 100% wrong.
