I was wondering if it's possible to estimate someone's likely GRE score given their SAT score. If it's possible, what GRE score range is a person with an SAT score of say 600v/700m likely to get?

Well, GRE math is probably a bit easier, and verbal is significantly harder. Writing it’s hard to say, especially since the SATs introduced grammar questions to the writing section, and it’s not just essays. But if you did anything in math or science, you likely didn’t read as much throughout college, and won’t do as well as all the English majors. And conversely, if you were a humanities major, you’re probably all set on the verbal, and the math will be slightly challenging. But I dunno, 550v/750m??

Well, I’ve heard that the scores are comparable. That was the case for me: 1450 SAT and 1420 GRE. My V went “down” and Q went “up” (750v/700m SAT and 650v/770m GRE). I don’t know how the percentiles compare (and percentiles are important).

Caveat: My practice GRE scores were a lot lower. In HS, you’re in language arts and math classes, and you have a lot of practice with SAT-type exams… that was my experience, at least. So I didn’t prepare for the SAT since school did it for me. But since going to college and being a science major, my vocabulary got a little rusty. I’m also the type to skip around on tests, so the GRE was hard for me to get used to. I had to prepare for the GRE on my own time.

I think someone with 1300 SAT should be able to hit 1300 (and go even higher!) on the GRE if they prepare a bit. Make sure you’re comfortable with the format and the types of questions. Practice!

Anyway, that’s just what I think based on my experience. While GRE and SAT scores may be comparable with a lot of people, some people get really different scores on them, too.
