While in college, how do schools cast for shows? Is any preference given to BFAs or BAs vs. nonmajors. How open or closed are auditions at various schools?

kardan, this will greatly vary from college to college, some schools have separate shows for BFA's and BA, some don't even allow non majors to audition. In other cases, those pursuing a Masters get preference over those pursuing a BFA or BA. If you are wondering about a particular school, it may be effective to post the question on that school's thread, and a current parent may be able to shed some light :).

Hi Kardan -- I think I suggested that you post the general question here.... rather than the general question on the CMU thread, which may not be read by as many people.... I agree with MTgrlsmom too, if you have a specific question about a school posting the specific question on a schools thread could be helpful, as well.

I would also suggest asking the specific schools when you are visiting the campus. Each school will have a different policy!

Good Luck!

I agree with the previous two posters.

Kardan - I do not know what you are really after - but if you want some formula or "Best Practices" of how casting is done.....it does not exist. I thought someday (I am old) that I would understand the mysteries of casting, I thought someday, when I was more involved on that end - that I might understand.

There is no sense in trying to understand from one show to another, from one school to another, from hour to another all that goes into or results out of casting. Maybe it is a little Zen - but you simply have to do your best at every audition, and then, hope for the best. Do not try to understand casting - trying to will only make you either vain or bitter.

Best of everything as you make your path.

This was a question the my S and his friends were asking, so I thought I'd put it out there. I will suggest to them that they ask their questions on CC, focusing on the schools they are thinking about applying to. Thanks for all of your feedback.
