How do schools view these kind of ECs

Hello CCers,

I have developed a twitter tool of my own - Tweriod

I hope you know what twitter is. The site is unique and no other tool that uses the same algorithm for providing the analysis it is made for, exists. It has been featured on many tech blogs and has been appreciated. I'm looking forward to getting it reviewed in TechCrunch, Mashable and some other "big" blogs.

My question is, how "great" does that look as compared to other ECs. I've recently introduced premium plans for the site and expecting an yearly income in thousands.

Another mentionable EC of mine is I've been awarded a certificate from the Commonwealth Games' Technical Director for pointing out serious security vulnerabilities in their (crudely, hacked and reported) website (the website was of National, perhaps International importance). Also, included in the list of my "hacks" are websites of "huge" corporations.

Most importantly, I am an International applicant. Indian to be precise. I'll be needing financial aid. I expect my SAT score to be ~2100. I'll be applying for class of 2012.

How these ECs ( only technical, computer stuff ) are viewed by Harvard, Stanford, MIT and Carnegie Mellon? Do they think of such students as just "geeks"?

Also, I've good grades in my freshman and sophomore high school years. They however dropped in my junior year due to some issues. I'm currently a senior and planning to score same as I did in my freshman and sophomore.

Looking forward to answers.

bump bump bump 10char

Come on people, is everybody thinking that isn’t my site and I’m a ■■■■■?

If anybody requires, I can upload a file there with some text so everybody here can confirm. Just let me know the text.

I think you will need to raise your SAT score into the mid-2200’s, or higher, to have any legitimate shot of admission into these most selective schools-- even with somewhat unique EC’s. These applicant pools are insanely competitive. Good luck!

The fact that you’re an international from India will make it tough, because you’re competing with very very qualified applicants. The fin aid will also be an issue because aside from a few top schools, most are reluctant to provide good aid to internationals.

Your SAT score is also too low for those schools. You should go back and dig up past Admissions threads from those schools and see the kind of applicants that were rejected.

Also, to be honest, I’m not too sure I understand what the purpose of your tool is. It tells you when you have the maximum volume of followers online? Why is that helpful exactly? Do that many people really care about getting their Tweets noticed?

@pch340 It’s a tool for business Twitter users. When they tweet a link to their blog post, they want to get maximum users to click it. That can be achieved when they tweet actually when their followers are online. Tweriod tells you when to tweet. :-)

Oh ok, I understand. That’s pretty cool. You should target businesses like food trucks in major cities, because they are constantly tweeting and trying to attract a large following.

Check out this page: [The 25 Best Food Trucks - Eat Cheap 2010 – New York Magazine](The 25 Best Food Trucks - Eat Cheap 2010 -- New York Magazine - Nymag)

Most food trucks have twitters. You should find a way to get in contact with them, and have them start using your tool, because the only way customers can locate them is through twitter or Facebook, so I’d imagine they have great use for something like this.

@pch340 Thanks for the advice. I’ll do that. Btw, as I said, it has been featured on many blogs and getting decent traffic.

BTW, what would be my chances at medium-rank schools like Michigan, University of Texas, etc… ?

good chance at medium rank schools such as ut. Need to know your gpa/rank however. Thats a very important factor!

I got 91% marks in freshman, 95.27% marks in sophomore (state-level 10th grade) Junior year score is too low and planning to get ~90% in senior year mid-term exam.

One issue is that you are counting on adcoms understanding- and valuing- these accomplishments. They may have zero perspective on which to rate them as impressive or not. If you think these are unusual or superb examples of your creativity in resolving a need, you’ll have to find a way to convince adcoms. Think about it.

@lookingforward Yep. If they don’t understand what the site is all about, it won’t be counted as an accomplishment.

A lot of people keep saying that and blame me for naming it like that. Come on guys, I’m not native… I couldn’t think of a better name!
@OverlyPractical

See if there’s a way to note the real impact- not just that you made some money or got some notice. If these are truly valid innovations, they may need more than a line in the EC section. You can’t devote the essay to an explanation of the impact-but perhaps you can describe the journey. Or,in one of your LoR’s, a relevant teacher can rave. But, this all needs to be above the level of tinkering- needs to be significant, not just another kid who writes code or comes up with an app. Good luck.

@lookingforward
LoR has to be from teachers only? Would it work if I get one from some internet celebrity? Who of course knows me and Tweriod well?

It should be from a teacher. Teacher’s ideally know the real you, your work habits, etc.

not to interrupt this thread or anything, but would they accept LoR from other people if you’ve moved schools too much to really get to know any of your teachers?

Here in India, (generally) you study 9th and 10th grade in one school and 11th and 12th in another (a junior college). So I hardly know any teachers where I am studying right now. But I know many (and they know me too) in my 9th,10th grade high school.
